questions about motor mounts
questions about motor mounts
i was at speed inc today and asked to check out a set of the prothane LT1 mounts. he said they were a pair and its all i would need, however they looked extremely weird. totally different from each other and at first glance it seemed as tho they were supposed to work together on one side, like one mounts to the block and one to frame but he said they are a pair, one drivers and one passengers side. ive never seen the mounts on the car but im thinking about changing to the prothane ones when i do my headers. is it a smart idea and will it be fairly easy once everything is out of the way or should i just keep the stock mounts in, and are they supposed to look completely different from each other?
Re: questions about motor mounts
they do look different from each other. its a fairly straight foward process, you remove the mounts from the clamshells, insert the new mounts and then bolt the shells back together. if your mounts are worn id replace them with poly's. some people have problems with headers and stock mounts and some do not.
Re: questions about motor mounts
alright, how does the process work? is there a pin to pull, then jack the motor up and the rubber/poly mounts connect onto the frame correct? ive never seen how an LT1 mounts.
Re: questions about motor mounts
Each side is a different mount and you need to remove the clamshell unit and then separate it(drill out the rivets) to remove the rubber mount and replace it with the poly mount. You just need to lift the motor a little bit to release tension on the mount to unbolt it and get it out. But it's a lot easier without the headers or exhaust manifolds in the way. The driver's side is a pain in the butt to drill out the rivets so be prepared to have some good drill bits ready.
Re: questions about motor mounts
It is kind of a bitch to drill the rivets out. I ended up having to buy some new bits as the old ones I had just weren't doing the job.
I got some energy suspension mounts, and they came with hardware to bolt the clamshell back together on the driver's side only.
It took some prying with a crowbar to get the mounts to line up, so definitely get as much crap out of the way as possible before you try this.

Re: questions about motor mounts
ok, im gonna do the poly motor mounts when i do my longtubes so ALOT will be moved, other than the pair of mounts for 50 bucks theres NOTHING else i need correct?thanks guys
Re: questions about motor mounts
alright cool. my dad is really scared about changing the mounts and he thinks its unnecesary, but idk. you guys think its best to just go all out and change the motor mounts while im in there for the headers? its got 97k on it.
Re: questions about motor mounts
yeah, thats all you need, aside from some good drill bits.its really no big deal and if you dont change the mounts theres a good chance your headers may hit in various places.
Re: questions about motor mounts
Yeah, with 97K miles you want to replace the mounts. You probably won't notice the extra play in the stock mounts right now, but with longtube headers you'll end up with something hitting with old stock mounts.
Re: questions about motor mounts
ok. my dads wondering is there like a pin like in the old style mounts similar to his 69 camaro, or is it something different? we will be able to do it fairly easily once everythign is outa the way but he wants to know beforehand what its gonna take.
Re: questions about motor mounts
There are like 3 or 4 bolts that bolt the mount clamshell to the block. There is 1 long bolt that goes through the center of the mount. Air wrench makes things easier. Just remember that the poly mont in the calmshell will move inside, to help line things back up you can stick something in there to pry it around. It can be a pain to get it all lighned back up. Dont be suprised if you have to go back and forth from side to side to make it work
Good luck and enjoy

It's pretty much the same as your Dad's '69.

It is a good idea with LTs. I had shorty headers on for a few years without any problems. Then a month after my Hooker LTs went in the headers started to gradually rub in various places my guess is due to the extra heat radiating off the LTs. New poly mounts fixed that problem for good... or at least for now.
