Questions about a hotcam in a 94 LT1
I am interested in the purchase of a hotcam kit from gmpartsdirect for my 94 Z28, but I have a few questions...
1. I hear there is a need to upgrade the optispark on 93-94 engines. Is this nessesary and how do I go about doing this?
2. Can I use my stock timing chain or do I need some sort of upgrade?
3. The kit I plan to purchase includes the cam, springs, rr's and retainers, are there any other parts I need for the upgrade other than gaskets and PCM programming? (like pushrods and lifters?)
Any websites about the install of a hotcam in a 94 LT1 motor would be very helpful. THANKS

1. You don't have to upgrade your opti for the cam install but a lot of people go to the newer vented style when they do the cam since it's all apart anyway.
2. You can use a stock chain but you should definitely at least purchase a new stock timing set, if it's the original it's probably quite worn.
3. You'll need a puller to remove the harmonic balancer and a gear puller to get the old crank timing gear off and a spring compressor, alot of people don't have these tools, I borrowed some from a friend. I replaced my pushrods with hardened ones but reused the stock lifters, they looked fine at 57k miles. Of course other small things like oil, filters etc.
I used this guide when I did mine along with a Haynes manual for specs and other info and mines been running great. Take your time and keep the motor clean while it's apart. Good luck, let us know if you have any problems.
