question about valve springs
Recommended Installed height: 1.75" (132lbs. pressure)
Open height/pressure: 1.25" (280lbs. pressure)
Coil bind: 1.15"
You don't want to get within .050" of coil bind so, therefore, the maximum lift is .500" if you have them installed at their recommended 1.75" installed height.

so your telling me the 986's are only good to .500? comp cams recomends them with the cc305 cam, and it's .510 lift with 1.5's, meangrn has 1.6's and I am worried it might be coil binding. We replaced the stock springs with the 986's, so as far as installed height I don't know.
Thanks

Also, as I mentioned above, the Comp catalog has complete tech info on their cams and even recommends one or more sets of Comp springs for each cam.
i have the CC 305 cam in the car. i called comp cams today and they said that those springs are good to .600 but the spring seat is about .060 thick so he sais to subtract that from the total lift with is .540 right? the CC305 cam is a .510 lift with 1.5 rockers so with the 1.6 rocker its about .540~.544 so he said that is prolly why i am floating the valves. this of course is only correct is the install hieght is right at 1.800's. does that sound right to u guys.
i think i have learned more about valve spring in the 5 min. convo. with the comp guy than i have ever known oops. keep in mind this is my first cam swap though.

You missed the installed height.Stock is 1.750 you can get .050 up retainers with the locks that go with them and elimanate the coil bind factor. Then you create a seat pressure problem as you will reduce your seat pressure which should be 135# on new springs. They will loose 10-15lbs after brake in.If the pressure is to light the car won't have it's proper power in the upper RPM range and could go so far as to cause a miss--otherwise the car just won't pull in the upper range and nose over when it gets all the springs will take.
I have said it before 99% of cam install problems are spring related and valve adjustment. They HAVE to be right.
