Question about Power Steering Pulley Bolt

Last week, one of my bolts (there are 2) snapped that attaches the power steering pump pulley onto the main bracket that holds the alternator, A/C, and power steering pulleys. I found that this occured because the other bolt had slid out of the bracket (I noticed the bolt was stripped a little). I purchased two new bolts and the hole in the bracket where the bolt had slid out is also stripped. To fix this, I would have to replace the main bracket which is tons of work, since I would have to pull everything off. I was wondering if I could just get a longer bolt the same hole size from a hardware store and put a nut at the other end of it. The factory bolts just screw in the holes to a certain torque, but couldn't I just do this since the hole goes all the way through, or would this hurt something?

Thanks-sorry so long!

I haven't really noticed, but if the hole goes all the way through and you can reach the back, then you could put a nut on it. You could also heli-coil the hole to repair it.

I just had to get a 5/16" bolt instead of the M8 (I believe these are the sizes) to use instead...This was the english equivalent, but it is a fraction larger, which work out well since it was stripped (make sure they are grade 8) I had to remove the alternator bracket to be able to put a nut on the back of the new bolt(the one that had the stripped hole). Everything seems fine now. (knock on wood)...I've been driving about 3 weeks since.

Be sure you get some extra nuts to put on the ends. I had a very hard time getting behind the pulley to tighten it on. My hand was too big and I kept dropping the nuts in the engine (had to get under the car with a flashlight and dig them out). Just remove the alternator bracket-it is attached to the front exhaust manifold or header bolt-just remove the whole bolt and it will be much easier. You'll see what I mean when you start...good luck!
