Question about my carbed LT1

I have a carbed LT1 that I'm putting together. I need to know if I can use my stock crank pulley or do I have to get the LT4 pulley balancer combo? I how somehow I'll have to time the thing, could I just put timeing tape on the ctock pulley? Hate to spend 350 bucks on that pulley.

Re: Question about my carbed LT1

The timing tape will be fine as long as you get it on accurately and get it for the right diameter.

Re: Question about my carbed LT1

i am confused, the LT1 is not balanced by the crank pulley at all, only by the flywheel/flexplate. from what I understand, you could basically put it on there anyway you want.

Re: Question about my carbed LT1

I think he's talking about ignition timing?

You might have a hard time finding something that fits though, I just looked at summit's catalog and the tape they have specifically states it won't fit LT1s/LS1s. If you don't want to spend the dough you could probably just mark the stocker well enough to figure it out though.

Re: Question about my carbed LT1

Put the engine on TDC firing stroke and make a pointer out of a coat hanger and mount under a timing cover bolt.Mark the balancer and aim the pointer and use a dial back timing light to set the dist. for initial timing.

Use the stock balancer.
No key so it may spin on the crank down the road.

Wouldn't the BELT eat up the tape????

LOL wasn't really thinking about LT1s when I made the post. I suppose that could be a problem, huh?

Re: Question about my carbed LT1

I think it might be if ya wanted to set the timing more than once.
Could get expensive buying tape.

Re: Question about my carbed LT1

yeah no room for tape on them LT1 pulleys. I'm thinking of fab'in up a pointer and useing a paint marker to mark the pulley.I have a keyed billet hub so it shouldn't move on me. I've never had to do this stuff before. Always had fuel injection. I have a rough idea about how to do it. Was just wondering about the pulley.

Re: Question about my carbed LT1

A stock crank has no key for the balancer. Are ya using an aftermarket?
When ya locate TDC just take the corner of a file and put a notch on the back side of the balancer lip and paint white.
Take a coat hanger and make a loop in one end of a piece to fit around 1/4" cover bolt and flatten the loop with a hammer. Bend a 90* bend at the loop and grind the other end to a point the correct length to reach the file mark.Put under approperiate bolt and tighten.

Re: Question about my carbed LT1

Thanks for the info, yup planned on doing something just like that, just didn't think about putting the notch in the pulley. About the crank hub. I have a billet hub that is keyed, and the pulley bolts to it, yes the hub is aftermarket but the pulley is stock. I'll double check tomorrow morning.
