Question about gears (3.73's) and city driving?!?!

im interested in 3.73's as my next mod. i read most of the posts on GEARS using the search feature. i found almost everything to be about racing and having no traction, and hard launching off the line.... but what i want to know about is regular driving around town?! gas mileage isnt really important to me, but i was thinking that maybe gears would save me money on gas driving around town?! i figure i would be shifting a lot sooner without having to give much throttle. is this correct?? regular driving around town i HATE the long period between 2nd and 3rd gear.... wouldnt 3.73's shorten this up a little?? im not really too educated on gears, but i would appreciate any advice. thanks.

Go for it! I do a lot of city daily driving in the summer time. In the spring I'm having my Motive 3.73 gears installed! I'm definitely looking forward to it.

they are fun yes... and yes they suck for traction... and yes they suck for high end...but those two failed to mention that NO THE GAS MILAGE DOES NOT GET BETTER its gets WORSE... this is NOT disputed.... 3:73s are baaaaad for gas milage.... and baaaad for drag racing... and baaaaaad for your cars top end... the only people they are good for are people who love laying down 168ft. of rubber at every stop sign and use HUGE drag radials at the track- i advise against them...

Why dont you just put 4:10's since you have a m6??

I agree with the fact that they REDUCE gas mileage. If you have an M6 then 4:10's are what most people recomend. Hoevever if you want a balance between traction and not so horrible gas mileage go with 3:73's I have 373s in my A4 and it really wakes the car up. Traction is a problem until you relearn how to launch with them. sorry but FRMULA1 is being narrow minded about them. I LOVE them and he is the 1st person that ive seen give gears a negative review. As far as killing top end ....well...my cars top speed was 157MPH stock with the stock 323 gears. Now the 373s probably cut the top speed down to about 140 BUT I sure get to 140MPH faster. so it doesnt NOT kill the top end....just hte TOP speed. Besides how often do you do 160 MPH?????? I have only done it ONCE on the florida tunrpike in daylight with NOONE infront of me to test the top speed. It passed the 155PMH mark a little them I let off so I got to 157, maybe it would ahve hit 160MPH but I decided to let off the gas.

GET THE GEARS!!!! If you dont car any about gas mileage and you have 17 inch rims or bigger with some meaty tires get the 410's !!!! you will thank me and hte others that agree

I went from 2.73's to 3.73's. My shift points are significantly lower now. I'm in overdrive at 35 mPH instead of 45 MPH. All of the other shift points are lower also, but the car has been garaged since Oct and I can't remember the specific points for the other shifts. You will lose some gas mileage though.

thanks a lot for all the responses! im pretty stuck on getting them! top end doesnt really mean that much to me. driving 150+ is not my thing, i would rather get to those speeds quicker. everyone with an auto seems to really like the gears... how about you M6 guys?? will i really notice a difference between my stock gears?? i attend the track maybe once a month, and i have drag radials on a spare set of rims. i cant really see how i would be getting worse gas mileage?? i figure right now driving around town in 5th gear, i am at about 2400rpms (around there) so if i got the gears wouldnt i be able to shift into 6th gear seeing as how the RPM's will be higher?? all you M6 guys... what speed can you guys shift into 6th at and cruise?? and my last dumb question... can someone explain what "regular" driving is like with the 3.73's?? giving normal throttle would i still be going through the gears a lot faster?? i really appreciate all the help! keep the info coming!!!

If you have an M6 then go with 4.10s. Driving around in the city will not affect your gas milage. With 4.10s at 72mph I'm at 2000rpm in 6th gear. They might hurt traction a little bit but the car is more fun to drive, easier to get going and easier on the clutch.

DO NOT GET 410's for a m6.
373 are fine, i have them and love them. use to have 4`10's they make your car useless, especially off the line. 373 are a good inbetween gear.

I agree!!! Stick with 3.73. 4.10 will hurt your rear end on a good hook take off.

go to Thunder racing I just ordered my kit about 4 hours ago, for $460 you get Gear of choice ( I got the 3 serriers carrier with 3:73 gears for my A4) T/A rearend girdle, installation kit, all the snythetic fluids and stud kit. Next week I am ordering me a Eaton Posi and tomarrow I am ordering a custom program from PCMforless. Hope these mods take off about .4-.5 tenths.

Good luck
