Question about crate engines

I'm thinking about putting a new LT1 or maybe a LS1 in my firebird, I don't know what to get. I want to run mid to low 12's on the motor at the track. I don't want an all out drag car, I want a street and track car. The car is not driven everyday, just weekends. I'd like in the neighborhood of 400 hp at the wheels and maybe a little more later on. I have been thinking about a 383 LT1, I'd like to get a crate motor with everything in it, I'm not sure what is cheaper? Pull my LT1 out and have it machined, and all the work done, or just get a crate engine?

Gonna need a built tranny as well, any suggestions would be great.

Thanks

Re: Question about crate engines

A LT1 crate motor from GM is just a stock replcement. I put my money in the motor you already have. get heads ported and polished, with custom cam. I would talk to LLoyd about your need. Then, all the is left is to have the short block rebuilt. In the long run you will save money and you will be getting whoat you really want..
