Putting the tranny in??
Putting the tranny in??
I dropped my transmission last sunday, becuase i need to put a new clutch in. I seperated the transmission from the bell housing. It was real hard to take pull the tranny out becuase I the shifter part was all the way back against the rubber boot when trying to pull the tranny back. My question is, which is the best way to put the tranny back in with the bell housing attached to the tranny or putting them in seperatly. Also the company that i purchased the clutch from which is SLP, said that i should replace the slave cylinder and pilot bearing. I don't know if this is true but i'm doing it anyways. Is there anything else i should pay attention to while putting it back in? Any suggestions would be appreciated because this is the first time putting a clutch in a car for me. Also what is a good tranny fluid to use. Is the gm syncromesh stuff good? Thanks.
I am in the same boat. I don't think you can put the trans back in without seperating the bellhouseing. You should replace the pilot bushing with the newer pilot BEARING. It is a pain and you can only get the old one out with a cold chisel. When you put it back in take your shifter off.

Think of it this way, how did you pull the tranny out? Did you seperate it from the bellhousing? If so wouldn't you want to do that to put it back in? I put them in seperate.
I don't think that you need to replace the slave, I never did until one of my clutches that broke took it out, never had any issues either before that.
The pilot bushing is behind the flywheel in the back of the crank, would you rather do it now while it is all apart or 10000 miles from now and have to go though all that again? I would replace it now it is only a 14 part and not hard to get in and out.

Well I finished the job and it all works fine. I replaced the slave and master cylinder because it was all one setup. But damn i will never do that again. It took 6 hours just to do that crap. It was the most frustrating thing out of the whole job. I rented a tool to get the pilot bearing out but it wouldn't fit. But my uncle told me a trick on how to get them out and it worked out great. All it took was some grease. To bad i still can't drive the car because i haven't registered it yet. I can't do that either untill i get it smogged but i got that damn ses light on. It won't pass with it on.
Yeah, im an idiot, it took me three times to realize that its easier to separate the bellhousing and the tranny, I took it out and put it back in with the bellhousing attached twice, and took it out once more like that, and this time it just wouldnt go back in with it on so like a genius i separated them and voila. And now the stupid clutch fork will not go in properly, I swear every time I do this its different on the same car. Anyway, congrats on a first timer working out properly.
