Purpose of A.I.R. Pump and What if Inlet Disconnected?

I was looking around the engine today and noticed that my A.I.R. inlet hose was not connected to my K&N FIPK intake tube. So here's what happened...

I bought a used K&N FIPK from someone on this board and when I removed the stock air tube, I don't remember disconnecting the AIR inlet hose. Looking at the used FIPK kit, the original owner had capped the tube where the AIR inlet hose would connect. I installed the FIPK, and didn't even think about looking for the AIR inlet hose....just assumed my 96 didn't have the AIR pump.

So now I've been running for a while now. Does not connecting the AIR inlet tube to the intake tube cause any issues? The only thing I can see is that the AIR pump is sending "unfiltered" air to the exhaust manifolds. What damage would this cause? I have been getting an SES code lately about the O2 sensor hot heating up quickly enough. Is this just an emissions thing?

It's pretty easy to re-install the AIR inlet tube, but wonder what affect this whole AIR pump would have to the system. Any robbing of power or just emmissions friendly?

You got to also remember that by having that hole there in your intake, you are litting unfiltered air into your engine. Not really a good thing to me to do.

Edit: Just remembered that you had the hole plugged up. I wouldn't think that it would cause any problems...
