Top isn't hard, contrary to popular opinion on this board. If I was doing it again I could get it out in probably 4 hours or so, first time took me a bit longer but i was doing it completely by myself and only had an hour or two to work on it a time, so it took a lot longer than it should have. Anyways, out the top isnt hard, I ended up having the heads and intake off by the time i pulled mine (was hoping to not have to pull it) and it obvously came right out by the time it was just a shortblock. Have fun.

I haven't pulled my LT1 yet, but since I've got the heads off at the moment, I can actually see the bell housing bolts, and get to them with a wrench. I think if you have the time to pull the heads, it should be much easier to take the thing out the top. But, dropping the front suspension sounds like it would be pretty quick as well.

Unless you strip the heads off a few bolts like somebody *cough cough me* did...so yea it comes out the top too

I just did a rering and bearing job on my motor and I am very limited on space so I didn't even remove it from the car. I have a one car garage so I don't have any place to work on the engine if I do pull it, so I just left it in. It really worked good that way and I would recommend doing it if you are just reringing it. I did not have to remove the opti, A/C, water pump, radiator, or unhook it from the tranny. I just undid the K-member and let it hang while supporting the powertrain with a jack stand under the tranny.

I just thought I'd mention this as an option,

You can pull through the top, i found it very quick. I didn't time myself but Im pretty sure it was under 4 hours. Best thing to do is remove the hood. Really the 2 times i pulled one I pulled the motor and tranny out the top. You have to remove the plastic cowl to make it work without hitting it too much, then its just a matter of getting everything on the right angle.

Yea taking that plastic cowl off makes it easier, I had my heads and intake off when i pulled it out and it still wasnt that easy to get out with the cowl on, going back in i left the intake off and it went in with some nearly violent shaking and creative angling, would've went in even with the intake on I think. Somebody sells a plate that bolts where the fuel rails are that makes it really easy to do, happy hooker might be the name of it im not sure though, search.

Ditto. Unbolt the crap, and raise the body up off the K member.

I left the heads on and came out the top. It took me 5 hours, but that was the first time ive ever pulled anything i was jus winging it. If it comes out the bottom the disadvantage is no mobility.

I woulda done it out the bottom if i had had a lift of some sort and or more room to work with, but since i didnt i figured going out the top (esp. since i already had the heads off) was the best way to go, overall I'd probably still say go out the top, its pretty straight forward. Dont forget the clutch fork, that thing wasted a good half hour of my time, grr....

I pulled mine out the bottom. It only took me 3.5 hrs with the help of my dad. We took a lot of time lowering the K-member out. We would lower a little then check to make sure nothing was hanging up. It seemed to easy for it to just drop right on out so we took our time. I bet in 2.5 hrs it could probably be done.

It's always easier taking things apart what about putting it in?
There's pro's in cons of doing each.

I prefer out the bottom took about 2hrs for me to drop mine.
Pic Here

I'm getting older and hate working / leaning over to remove all the crap on the motor before I pull it out.

I had mine out from the bottom in 2 hours. I thought it was easy.
And it was my first time ever yanking a motor.
