Pulling motor out of top

I have searched and still want to know this is my first time pulling the motor out of my 95z and want to know how hard it is. Iam going to get the happy hooker and with the happy hooker do you have to take both the ac condenser and the radiator. How long does it take to do this too.

You have to take out the AC Condenser, radiator, Everything that hooks to the motor and the water pump, actually remove everything you can from the front, makes it much easier

Dont forget the balancer, I have heard of alot of people, including myself, that can not get it out without the balancer pulled. And then all the other stuff, Power steering and AC and Air pump and i pulled my intake and valve covers to make life a little easier. I yanked mine out with the tranny and bellhousing off too.I think you can pull it with the stock manifolds but i pulled my hooker longtubes out, so im not for sure on that one. I think me and a buddy pulled it in around 4 hours out the top working pretty fast paced.

I only wish my chevy dealership had thought the same way. They unhooked everything from the bottom. Im not sure why though. They said it was the way they did the Lt-1's out of Camaros. I would have thought that over the top was OK but they said it wouldn't go due to the severe angle it had to be put in.

I think with the proper tools and equipment it would be easier going out the bottom. It also takes expereince. I have always done my motors from the top. I dont feel like messing with a K-member and all the suspension. My prefernce is the top but i actually think the bottom is quicker and that is why all the dealerships do it out the bottom

When they lifted the CAR off the ENGINE.. that was a trip. I got it on video. It was a once in a lifetime experience for me... I doubt I'll ever have the motor out again.
Out the bottom seemed easy enough for the guys at the dealership. I lost a plug wire due to poor wire management when it got hooked up on something.. it snapped like a spagetti noodle.
might as well get a new K-Member then.

I Left the ac system intact, just unhooked the ac,powersteringpump bracket and tie it a side. Also removed the driverside head to get it out. Next time i also will remove the crank hub.

There's a few pictures in my signature of the motor going back in through the top. I did it by myself without any special equipment in about 5 hours...that included putting in my new longtubes.

That is a pretty good article!! But you do not even need a hoist lik ementioned there.. Just 2 good sized floor jacks and 2 good jackstands.

Actually I don't think I'll ever do it from the top again, Screws up the body too much from crawling around

I have heard that you dont need a hoist, but I always use a hoist since you will need it to move the motor around anyway. BTW...glad you guys like the article.

Good point, I rebuilt mine after pulling it from the top and although coming out wasn't so bad, going in would have been easier with the right Cherry Picker setup, at least having the hand crank that horizontally moves the engine back, that would have made my life so much easier due to trying to stab the overcab portion and extreme angle. I'll go from the bottom next time and replace the K-Member/upper/lower A-Arms with tubulars while I'm at it.
