pulling the engine out,,questions

me and the pops are getting ready to pull the engine out of the z, just wondering about how long it take to get out?
we have an engine stand, and a lift and all air tools and stuff..how long should it take to get out?

also, i have jet hot longtube headers on there, and i would rather not take them off until i get the engine OUT of the car, if i unbolt the headers from the y-pipe, will the engine come out ok from the bottom? or what else will have to come off first?

I just pulled mine out the other night, took about 8 hours working casually. I didn't take the stock exhaust manifolds off, but the longtubes may pose a problem. If you can at least get the engine up a foot, you wouldn't have a problem taking them off.

Hey Jason, what's up? I just pulled my motor out, but I did it from the top (w/out heads on). I would call Chad if I were you, he just dropped his from the bottom not too long ago, and it took him like 3 1/2 hours or so. I guess I have a race when I get done??? I wish you luck. The GM847 will prevail.

Take it easy,
Benji

what would the advantages be of taking it out the top? i always heard its easier to take it out from the bottom, will you have to take the headers off to get it out from the top?
reason i ask is, when i put on the headers, i had a real hard time, and had to tweak the headers a bit to get them in there,,they will come off with the heads, but i'd rather do it with the engine out of the car..

benji, we'll have to talk sometime..
things should be under way soon..

I just put my new motor in not to long ago and it's not all that hard. I wouldn't reccomend pulling it out with the headers still installed do to room factor. I've heard of some individuals saying you can leave the passenger side on, but take the drivers side off and you can get it out. I pulled mine out with the headers off and intake off and it was still a little bit of a pain in the ***. When I put the new motor in the same thing no intake or headers. The problem with leaving the headers and intake on is you limit the the movement of the engine to much and you'll end up scratching up your engine bay or headers. I pulled mine out in about 4hrs with a friend, it took me about 5hrs to put the new one in just because I had to re-check everything twice. Good luck on the engine.

You might want to look at Ken's page for some info about going out the bottom.

97ramairtransam,

I will take you up on the happy hooker, since I'm about to drop a 383 back into my Z. Catch me at gbtank@comcast.net. Thanks.

I recently pulled my motor out the bottom with the exhaust manifolds still on and it came right out, no problem. IMHO pulling it from the bottom is probably easier if you have access to a lift, as I did. When I put the motor back in, I already had my headers on and it slipped right in, no problem... I would assume that pulling it out with the headers still would be the same. Just be really careful so that nothing scratches them.

I forgot to mention that the headers I installed were Jet Hot LT's...

Taking the engine out is easier especially if you use headers.. No need to have a lift either..

You can bolt the headers, wiring harness, transmission, practically everything outside ofthe car, then slide it under and bolt up. Do a search for taking engine out of the bottom. There should be soem info on this way.

Isn't pulling the wires threw the firewall a major PITA though? Seems like it would be!

Not hard at all!! Pull the PCM, unplug three connections under the glove box and then pull them through...
