pulling block from top... order?
pulling block from top... order?
I was wondering what order I should do this in to pull the block. I also was wondering if I need to take off the water pump, timing cover and all that crap up front. the heads are off.
what order do I unbolt stuff? Get the cherry picker on the motor then start unbolting the transmission? I am leaving the transmission in if possible
thanks again

Re: pulling block from top... order?
Take off the headers, intake, and transmission to make it easiest. Also take out the radiator. If you take the struts off the hood, you can tie it back and leave the hood on while taking the motor out. I have heard before that you can take a manual trans out with the motor, but I can not vouch for that and I know that it wouldn;t be easy that way.
Re: pulling block from top... order?
I just did this last saturday. You can leave the balancer, hub etc on the front. But all the accessories had to come off for me. Also the radiator, etc had to come out. I tried to take the engine out alone but the transmission didn't want to seperate for some reason so I just took them both out at one time. Good luck and if you have any more questions let us know.
Re: pulling block from top... order?
I can, and have pulled engine and tranny(M6) with all accesories still on the engine, I did pull the oil filter. just pull out the fans, radiator, and ac condenser...jack the rear of the car as high as possible with boards under the front tires and pull it all right out the top.. I can have the engine pulled out of my car in under 2 hrs.. good luck...
Re: pulling block from top... order?
When I pulled my motor out the top I had the intake and heads off, but the automatic still attached. I did take out the radiator, waterpump, alternator, etc. Basically if you can pull it off you might as well go ahead and do it. Hood was still attached. It wasn't too hard but you do have to get the motor/trans at a pretty extreme angle for it to clear and come out.
Re: pulling block from top... order?
thanks man, your help is unmeasureable!! Transmission will stay on then, if it is possible... water pump will be out in 5 mins, so no biggie there... anyone wanna trade a m6 for a4?
you say pretty extreme angle, but hood doesnt come off?
also do I have to take off the front bumper?
thanks again

Re: pulling block from top... order?
I took off the water pump and intake, left on all the accessories on the bracket (alternator, etc.) and the heads were on too. It came out fine, automatic trans and all.

Re: pulling block from top... order?
Whether you have to take the bumper off or not depends on how long your engine hoist is and where you place the chains. With where I placed the chains and the length of the hoist i used; the hoist wanted to pull towards the bumper. So to feel comfortable when installing it i'm going to just remove the bumper. It's up to you and once you start you'll realize whether you or not you should.

I didn't have to take off the front bumper, or jack any of the body up.
You do have a load leveler for this right??
Re: pulling block from top... order?
As you can see in my pic above, I did not have a leveler. Just two guys of average strength steering the engine/trans, and another guy working the hoist. A level I'm sure would help, especially if you don't have a few buds to help you out, because as the guy said, it will want to swing toward the nose of the car.
Also, unless you are going to remove the radiator brackets and the AC condenser brackets, removing the bumper does not give you much more clearance since those brackets sit between the bumper and engine bay. I'm assuming the guys mentioning this have also removed those brackets for more clearance. And, yes that will give you lots of extra room if you do the extra work.
Good luck!
