Problems with running open headers?

Are there any problems with this, except for generally being really loud? When I visit my dad in IL, it will be my only chance to install my headers, and I was scammed out of 300 bucks so I lost the money for the y pipe, and header bolts. I may just have enough for the Breslin Locking header bolts, but not for the y pipe. I don't have the tools at my current location. Are there any problems with turbulance/back pressure etc., or any performance prohibiting problems?

I ran mine that way for a day and it richened up so bad that it fouled the plugs really fast (about 15 minutes). You can get bolt on cherry bombs at autozone for $19 a piece, thats what I am running and it sounds really nice.

Re: Problems with running open headers?

I don't plan on putting the o2 extensions on till about 2 weeks after installation. I'm gonna get the rears deleted.

I thought the front O2 sensors were needed to run correctly?

Re: Problems with running open headers?

People say to keep the o2's off the fronts for a week or two while the headers burn off.

Re: Problems with running open headers?

Yeah the new coatings from the headers can ruin the o2 sensors, that's why most people that install them wait a week or 2 to put them on, so most of the coating has burned off.

Re: Problems with running open headers?

If your running O2's, the air and exhaust will cause a venturi effect and it will suck a small amount of oxygen past the O2 sensors before being pushed back out the end of the header collector. This will cause an extreme rich condition under part throttle and very undesirable results. And it's LOUD. You will almost 99% get pulled over.

Yeah the car was dyno tuned by Ion. When I put the exhaust on it fixed the problem right away. I think it had something to do with the O2 being so close to the end of the exhaust. It may have been the db's setting of the knock sensor too, but I think it was the O2. Even on a carb motor you have to tune the carb different for open headers and full exhaust.

Re: Problems with running open headers?

You said a carb needs tuning if you have open headers or full exhaust. Obviously my LT1 isn't carbed, but does this still apply? Ion told me that I didn't need it?

Here is a link to the thrush website, scroll down and you can find it. You will have to take the part number to autozone, I know they carry them and they were $19 a piece when I bought mine about 6 months ago. Make sure they look b/c at first the brilliant guy at autozone said they didnt have them then I glanced over at the computer screen and I saw them. When I told him he was like you didnt say you had longtubes. I hate stupid people at parts stores. Good luck. Where in Illinois are you going to do this at?
