Pro 5.0 question!!!!!

Okay.....someone enlighten me! In another thread, someone posted that the Pro 5.0 isn't a true short throw shifter. If the Pro 5.0 is not a true short throw shifter, how is it regarded as the premiere shifter by a very large portion of our members? I just purchased mine about 2 weeks ago, and I haven't installed it yet, therefore I have no opinions on the throws. I purchased mine because of the high praises it has received on this message board. My buddy has a C5 Vette that has the B&M Ripper, and the throws are incredibly short...that shifter feels awsome! I was under the impression that the Pro 5.0 was supposed to be better than the B&M. Are the throws on the Pro 5.0 not as short as the B&M or what...did I buy the wrong shifter for shorter throws?

i think you should install it though and tell us the diffrence, you have accesss to both diffrent types so it would be an awsome experiment.
let us know!

Cool

The shifter is a fine piece and with a shortened stick will make the shifting feel like a short throw. It is as precise a shifter for the 1-2-3 throws I have ever used in 28 years of daily driving. It is near impossible to miss the 2-3, as the shift is effortless the way the throw is designed.

Install it. You will not be disappointed.

As jim88iroc305 said, its a precision shifter. If you are after the shorter throw, you can simply cut a 1/2" or so off the Pro 5.0 stick. It has a ton of thread on the stick so you can cut it and don't need to put new threads on it (although I'd reccommend running a die over it anyway just to clean the threads)

hey carlos! was it my thread your talking about? man i want a pro 5.0 also i think thats the shifter i have decided on purchasing. how much did you pick yours up for. keep us posted on your opinion with the shifter. the main reason y i would get the pro 5.0 over the b@m is because the the pro5.0 has a stick that can b removed and install the infamous lous shorty stick! the b&m is all solid one piece and cant b removed. in the long run when if i do decide to purchase the lous shorty than i can buy that and compile it with the pro 5.0 and have a great combo! im still also trying to find out if it is true short throw or just shorter stick cuz the pivot ball is what makes the length of throw i thnk!

I won my Pro 5.0 on an eBay auction for $145. Well, I guess I'll take my shifter to work today and chop the HELL outta my stick and add more threads, and hope that it emulates the really short SNICK-SNICK-SNICK type throws like the B&M in my buddy's Vette!

The solid stick is a recent design change for the B&M in the last few years. I am pretty sure the ones I looked at for my IROC in the late 90's had a stick bolted in which was removeable.

Well...I finally put my Pro 5.0 in. Although I haven't had a chance to drive the car yet, I must say that while just sitting there going through the gears, the shifter felt solid and precise! I took a few photos for anyone that may be planning on installing one of these shifters, and wonders what it would look like if you decide to hack the shifter handle like I did.

I decided that I absolutely hate the way the Pro 5.0 shifter handle angles towards me. What other stick will fit?

Honestly, I didn't notice a WHOLE lot of difference in performance between the Pro 5.0 I have now and the SLP shifter I had just before it except for the fact that I shelled out $100 more than the SLP cost me....

I installed a PRO 5.0 a few months ago, and I agree that the throws aren't as short as I thought they would be from others opinions. I cut almost all the threads off also, as I installed a slip-fit Momo **** that didn't need them. BUT, the shifter is very, very precise and solid feeling. I like the shifter, but I do think they could have made the throws shorter with the pivot ball instead of just relying on short sticks.

Exactly how does the pivot ball have an effect on the length of the throws?

Cool

I can tell you Lou's Short Stick will be angled to you. Best bet is to cut down the stock stick, buy some locking washers and put it on for feel test; then, use stock stick or bring the Pro 5.0 stick to a machinist and have him fab one for you using both styles. Gonna be a $$$$ proposition.

I let someone more technically qualifier explain the shifting mechanism and the concept of "short throw".

Wouldn't hurt to leave all as is. I'm sure the setup will grow on you. To the best of my recollection this is the first thread ever I have seen non-positive comments on the 5.0.
