Previous owner stripped the passenger side PS pump screw!

So i was driving down the road and suddenly noticed i had no power steering and my check gages light was on!! I was about 30 miles from home so i pulled over to the side of the road and noticed my serpintine belt had slid off! I rushed home and somehow i had it before the battery got low! It was dark.

Anyway after multiple times reinstalling the belt only to have it come off immediatly i noticed the ps pump pully was crooked and apon further inspection found that the bolt on the lower end of it was stripped!

So my question to you is can i just get a little bit longer bolt? Or am i going to have to tap it? Note that the screw is fine its the inside threads on the hole that are stripped!

This is my only car and i need it for work what do i need to do?

You will most likely need to remove the pump so you can drill out the stripped thread and re tap it so you can install a heli-coil.

Among the first things to do is to measure the diameter and thread pitch of the bolt that came out. Whomever installed that bolt (that person is not your friend) may have wedged a smaller diameter bolt into the hole just to prop things together.

Check with Shoebox.com to determine the dimensions of the original bolt. Double check to make sure before you start drilling and tapping. You might be able to see into the hole with a mirror and flashlight to inspect the conditions of the threads before you start, as well. Eliminate all the simple, less complicated possibilities before you assume the worst.

Yep, just helicoil it. I had the same problem with mine, both PS bolt holes.

Get the right size & run a thread cleaner or carefully a tap. Is it good? Put a new bolt in & torque it down ~ use medium strength thread locker if you have concerns ~ if that does not work its helicoil time ~ don't be intimidated by helicoils if you never used one ~ read & follow the helicoil instructions & you will be fine.

Thanks for the replies everyone it seems that not just the lower one is stripped but both the top inside and the bottom inside holes are stripped! Now the funny thing is the bolts only go half way in with the pump on,So do you think i can go to an auto parts store and get the same bolts but maybe a little longer? I screwed the bolts in all the way and they are able to be tightened down....

I'd be very carefull if using a thread chaser in the aluminum bracket. If you get any debris in it on the way out you can mangle the threads. A tap offers a much better flute for the garbage to fall into. A longer bolt probably won't do much for you except give you a 1/4" or so. I believe the hole is a blind tap.
