Preventative maintenence on AC system.

After reading another thread regarding the AC system in our cars.
Is their any type of PM that can be done to prevent having to replace the entire system.
I currently have 183,000 miles on my car and have only had to have it charged once. The car itself has only had a radiator, 2 opti's and 2 waterpumps go bad (aside from routine wear items). I have had the car for 9 years, so with those miles somethings got to give out.

not really it is closed system the best thing is to use it by using it it keeps the seals conditioned.....as far as maintanance new drier and expansion valve is about it cant really service the compressor but when a/c systems sit for a while the seals go bad in the winter it is best to turn it on for about 5 mins at least once a month

Well in Houston it gets used just about all year, even though I have heard that you should let it run for awhile if you dont.
Thanks for the reply.

The main thing is that it is leak free. Contamination by foreign matter is the worst thing that can happen to a system (other than pure component failure due to age). If it continues to cool well, then you should be ok.
