Power steering fluid
Power steering fluid
How do i change the power steering fluid, and is it important to do? Its very possible that my car has the original fluid in it. Is there anything else i should do to my steering?
Re: Power steering fluid
Shoebox page has a good writeup on bleeding it[which you'll have to do after refilling it..]
I took the reservoir off and cleaned it, rigged an extension on the return hose, and started the car for a FEW secs to drain it, have a way to control the HIGH pressure outflow[ask how I know.. it shot out of the container I had the hose end in, and sprayed all over, doing it alone.. make sure you wedge the hose in the container]
Then refill it, and bleed it.. it took some time to work all the bubbles out[ you can feel that.. it 'vibrates' when you turn]
I used Valvoline Synpower Synthetic Blend.. Pep Boys etc comes in plastic quarts that look like the oil containers..
Did it NEED it? Probably not, but I think freshening it after 10 years a good idea.. The old stuff was pretty dirty..

Re: Power steering fluid
Capacity is 1.5 pts..
So a quart fills it..
I got 2 quarts and used one to flush it also[forgot to add that up in the other post]what I did was pump the old out[start car but don't run that pump DRY for long!Try not to run it dry at all if you can] then refill with fresh, then do it again..
Then clean the reservoir [Brakleen etc] and then refill it, and then bleed it.. top off as needed..
