Pounding under my seat during hard accel
Pounding under my seat during hard accel
****, i think i broke it this time...
It was like 50 degrees here last week and the snow had melted away, so i decided to take out the camaro for a quick trip to taco bell. Anyway when i get there, there were some ricers in the parking lot (checking out each others neons, discussing the wonders of "Vtak", and feeling up on each others meat whistles, i dunno what ever ricers do when they hang out).
While rolling out of the parking lot and there all "mean mugg'n" me. So I decide to do a real smokey burnout to show them what's up (AMERICAN MUSCLE BEEEYATCH). So i stomp the brake and lay into the throttle and commence "smokey burnout mode", so i let off the brake and begin to roll out of there when i hear this "thump, thump, thump" coming from under my seat. (F u C K). First time i've heard that one before. So after i crapped my pants, I rolled up to the next stop sign, and start to go and sure as ****, "thump, thump, thump" coming from under my seat. The noise stops as soon as it gets in to gear, (it's an auto). I took it real easy on the way home and tried to crawl under there to see if i could see WTF was going on. nothing. On my way home, just my luck it began to rain/sleet real hard. SO i wasn't under there long. It's been real crappy here since, 5in of snow, and i'm without a garage. So i haven't had a chance to really get up under her. Anyway, a couple of days later, I wrecked my Prizm and had to take it to a body shop (it was more work than i was willing to do in the snow). So now i'm stuck driving the camaro around in 5in of snow,(sand bagged down with 5 sixtyfive lbs bags of sand of corse.) going to and from work. (only about 2 miles luckily) with this crazy thumping sound coming from what i think is my transmission. I had heard the auto trans on these cars were was pretty tuff, but i just bought it, and i'm pretty positive the guy who had it before me was real hard on her. My other thought was maybe the torque converter??? It only does it when i lay into the throttle mind you. But it will do it in every gear.
Anyone had this problem? If so what was the deal? i have the cash right now to replace the trans if that's the case. but i'd rather put it else were.

Re: Pounding under my seat during hard accel
My friend had the exact same problem in his car. Hard accelaration and thump thump thump right underneath the console. He thought it was the tranny slipping but I corrected him and told him it was the tranny mount.
Re: Pounding under my seat during hard accel
while my tranny mount was slaughtered, i would roll through first gear pretty much until it shifted to second, then actually press the gas somewhat. that eliminated the banging while driving around because it was downright scary.
Re: Pounding under my seat during hard accel
I had the same problem a while ago and it turned out the mount just came loose, but its happening again so I'm going to go ahead and get a new one. What do you all suggest then for a new mount? Same old stock rubber, or the solid mount. Obviously the solid mount is going to be a bit of a rougher ride, but will it last longer? Any info/links are appreciated...
Prices would be appreciated as well.

Re: Pounding under my seat during hard accel
The day I brought my car home I was taking a buddy out and the exact same thing, THUMP.
I got under it, saw what happend, put on a poly one, and bingo, never had anther problem. Now that same mount is on my new transmission, still no problems. (I actually got poly motor mounts now too).
BTW- get the poly tranny mount, the stocker replacement from the autopart stores WILL BREAK AGAIN, I promise.
