Swapped the cam and springs.i was careful about keeping dirt out.Left the oil that was peviously in it and drove @2oo mi.Changed oil.drove it 1000 miles.Changed heads with the same oil routine.I now have about 2600 miles in the cam and couldnt be happier.

Well, so far everyone that had done a cam and heads at the same time has experienced bearing failure.

Maybe people should be doing the cam putting the engine back together and THEN do the heads...

Yeah, maybe doing a cam and heads seperate would be the best thing to do. Hell, check this pic out. Before I put the intake back on I thought I would be alittle **** and just pour 5 qts of fresh oil on top of my lifter valley and let it drain down. The pan was empty before I did this and look at the oil after I drained it. This is just from letting it run down without running the motor. I have used mobil 1 since the car was new and the valley looked very clean when I took it apart. The fresh oil looked like it had 3000+ miles on it.

I did Cam Last year & heads this year. So far no real problems. I hope I don't jinx myself but the car is fine. Just a bit low on the OP though. The bottom end does have 87,000 on it too. Not at all hard & I can't wait to be able to rebuild my LT1 block I have sitting in the garage....

After reading the post on heads effecting the cam bearings and all that, I would like to hear from all that did cam installs.

1. What oil did you use for break in and how long before changing?

2. Did you do heads at the same time?

3. Was the swap a success or do you lose a bearing?

Just like to see what sort of stats we get from the members here

Jeff D.
1. 10w30 valvoline and let it break-in for 20 miles or so and changed my oil. then again in about 500 miles. my motor had 82k on it at the time and now has 87.

2. no

3. so far so good.

Re: Post your cam swap experience here

How about if you buy a used cam? I am going to buy a used cam, and have my heads ported and polished, and have 2.00"/1.56" valves put it. I guess it wouldn't hurt to use some 10w30 Valveoline dino oil, and break it in like its new? thanks guys
