Well, I was assuming that they did, since they charged me something like $35 to do so. Now I'm wondering. Hmm...

The machine that does it cost a fortune in block off plates to seal up the water jacket in the head's (different ones)and there is very little return for the investment.
They probably did a visual, didn't see anything an called it good.Hard to see in the port.
From what you said just putting water in the jacket would have shown them the leak.

Re: Possibly cracked block?

ive got a spare set of stock heads sitting here if you want to borrow them just to get it running for a while until you can get some decent heads.

Thanks, though it's been sitting for close to 6 weeks...a couple more isn't going to hurt me, I guess.

That's really bad that they did not find that crack, even a vac test to see if the valves are still sealing correctly would show up a crack into the port. Ask to see the process they use to pressure test (if that's what they are really doing) The bench doesnt lie, like racerdude said we have a big fixture that holds the head and blockoff plates that are basically torque plates but will rubber on them, then 40psi of air is put into the water jacket and we can spray water everywhere to look for leaks...it never fails to show a crack.

Re: Possibly cracked block?

Well, today they put the head on the pressure tester and found a leak. The machinist took me back there and showed me the setup MachinistOne described. He quickly found a hole close to the intake valve guide for #3. It was a really small hole, and I did not see it at first, since it really was the size of a pinhole. The only thing they can figure out is that since he did a pressure test before he cleaned the heads last time, there was some buildup plugging the hole during the pressure test that was later removed when they cleaned the heads. The head is being sent to an aluminum welding shop and should be good as new soon. I'm sure it's going to be a lot cheaper than getting another engine.

Great. Glad ya took the time and had the patience to do the checking before rippin' and tearin' things apart. Most of the time it is cheaper and ya generally find what ya are looking for.
