Possible rebuild in the near future....what should I do?

OK this is all depending on if my head gasket is going out or not. If the head gasket is bad then I am going to freshen up the motor.

Here's the deal: I plan on doing a strong 383 in the future but that won't be until I get the car paid off and I am out of school (4-6 more years). Well if the head gasket is bad then I am going to pull the motor and just freshen it up a little bit. I want to at least do a cam and maybe a few other things. What all should I do??? I won't do the heads, just maybe freshen them up with new springs and stuff, but I may port the intake. I will put on a throttle body and headers. Keep in mind that I will still be running nitrous so i would like to put in a cam that would work good with my nitrous. I would like to keep mods to the bottom end to a minimal. I might bore the block and put in some forged pistons but would like to keep the crank and rods stock.

I was thinking about getting the 224/236 114LSA cam. would this be a good cam?? How much would the bottom end handle??? Would it be safe to run that cam with a shot of nitrous on the stock bottom end???\

I will upgrade the whole valvetrain. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

I'm doing a budget rebuild right now.

New rod and main bearings
crank turned .010/.010
block boiled, oil galley's cleaned out, new freeze plugs, cylinders crosshatched, new cam bearings
rods machined for new rod bolts
new head bolts
new 224/236 .535/.555 112 lobe sep
Valve job
new valve springs and machine shop setting them up to specs with additional hardware
new stock oem timing set
new clutch disc only

I'll update when I a price as soon as the machine shop give me a price.

This should last me another 107,000 miles

should i replace the rods???? I am going to replace the pistons and do some intake work then freshen up the heads with the cam. i heard it would be a good idea to do the rods and get some rod bolts.

here is my list so far.

all new valvetrain (springs, pushrods, lifters, RR's)
224-236 114 lsa cam
ported stock intake
tb (52 or 58????)
lt's
off road y pipe
valve job on the heads (can i go bigger valves on the heads?? will it gain me anything??)
bored .030 over
turned crank
all new bearings
balanced rotating assembly

how does that list sound???

With what you are doing now, I would say have them machine in new rod bolts to the rods you have. My machine shop looked mine over and said do that. The set up you are going to run till you do the stroke in the time frame you said should be fine.

I didn't see you are running nitrous also. I guess it is going to depend on how big of a shot you are going to freebase.

As far as having new sized valves machined in, that will increase the price significantly. But you will need it when you stroke it, and will gain some horsepower on your 355 set up too. Provided they know what they are doing.

Comp cams screwed up my cam and ground it on a 114 lobe sep instead of the 112 I ordered. But I am going to put it in anyways. I'm not going to wait another 10 days to have them grind me a new one.

WHAT SIZE OF VALVES SHOULD I GO WITH??? AND WOULD IT BE WORTH GETTING A BIGGER THROTTLE BODY AND PORTING THE INTAKE???

I think I am just going to put a cam and do the suspension with this car and try to see how fast I can go on a cam and nitrous. I have a 350 4 bolt main that I am thinking about stroking to a 383 and putting it it something older. Either late 80s bird or late 60's bird. So this car will just have the cam and bolt ons.

I want this car to be a fast street car and then get a older cheaper car and make it into a street rod.
