Re: is it possible to pull the motor from the top

yep, just put mine back in from the bottom and I did it by myself. I have never done anything like this and it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. It was nice to take everything off and back on with it already out of the car like that.

what do you have to take off the engine/engine compartment to drop it from the bottom?

Re: is it possible to pull the motor from the top

6 bolts hold the k member to the body, 8 shock tower bolts, 4 trans cross member bolts, undo the 2 brake lines that goto the front left and right lines at the abs unit under the hood, disco the abs sensor on the inner driver/passenger side fender, disco the AC connectors, undo battery and put the power steering container with the motor....etc.. etc.. all in all what u want to do with the harness is have ALL of it ontop of the motor when u pull it out, dont forget the coolant lines, ac lines, and chassis grounds, few more things im missing, but its VERY easy, 4.5 hours for me and another guy using a lift, and no guide.

I would agree on out the bottom... you can see a couple pictures I took during removal/installation on my cardomain site below. And I did it by myself very slowly, and would do it this way again

Anything called a "happy hooker" is a must-have

Re: is it possible to pull the motor from the top

Actually, I might have tried out the bottom, but had no room for everything (it was hard enough just getting the car into the apartment), so it was out the top with the Happy Hooker. But I'm a Miller High Life and Valvoline guy, and we don't take the easy way for nuthin, anyway. And in addition, I'm not callin it an installation unless some blood was shed. Think of it as an offering, if you will, to the F-Body gods, that your new engine will be strong and happy. Like mine is.

Trust dude, hands down, from the top. If you do it from the bottom it is hell without the right equipment. Plus you will have to realign everything. Top is much easier.

Re: is it possible to pull the motor from the top

I did mine from the top with the Happy Hooker. Kinda tuff comin out, because I was by myself and a first timer.

Going back in was total cake. I even bolted my T56 up before I dropped the engine in. By myself in my home garage with no special tools besides a cherry picker and the Happy Hooker, I had the motor in with motor mount bolts tightened (complete with Intake already on) in about 1 hour, no lie. And I didn't have to touch steering, brake lines, etc. Zero help, completely solo.

Took another 2-3 hours to hook it all up and turn the starter over. Overall, I don't think there's that much difference between top and bottom, in terms of time and hassle. It's more about what space and what tools you have to work with. If you have a lift and the right under-the-car stand for the K-member setup, I'm sure that's great. If you're at your own place and don't have the special stuff, from-the-top is pretty easy, but I'd get the Happy Hooker from TPIS.

Re: is it possible to pull the motor from the top

Going out of the bottom is nice when you have a lift, but it is pretty simple out of the top and Ive done it a million times that way. You dont need to remove the heads, I definately wouldnt remove the transmission (ugh clutch fork)...hell all I really take off is balancer, starter, steering knuckle, and a header or two (with slp midlength headers, I didnt even need to take one of them off). Water pump/brackets/plugs/wires/opti/etc etc stay right where they are and its up and out in a few hours. the Happy Hooker is a requirement and be careful not to strip any of the fuel rail bolt holes. I went to a hardware store for the strongest/longest bolts I could fit for it, and it supports the weight fine each time, somehow!
