Possible causes of random knock?

As the title suggests, I am having problems w/ my car pulling timing when it randomly picks up knock. I started using Sunoco 94 to see if maybe the extra octane would reduce it at all, but it has had no effect. For example, I could be driving down the road and the timing is advanced up to 40 degrees. I could have ZERO knock then. But as my MAP value changes, my timing might go all the way down to 28 and then it'll pick up random knock and pull 9 deg. all the way down to 19 deg. This is why I think it isn't real knock because I can be advanced 40 w/ no knock and 28 w/ 9 deg. Makes absolutely no sense. When I first had the car together I scanned it while cruising around and wot and got zero knock whatsoever. Currently I pull between 2 and 3 deg. at wot. I can be cruising for periods of time with absolutely no knock, then all of a sudden have it, then it'll go away and so on and so forth. I do hear a few rockers but why would I just get knock here and there. It always seems like I have NO knock for the first few minutes I'm on the road after a cold start so I'm not sure if that plays into it at all but figured I'd give you guys all the info I have. That's about it...random knock and it's really driving me nuts. I am going to adjust my rr's again but I just don't see them as being able to cause THAT much knock THAT randomly. btw, I did change the knock sensor and problem still persists. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...
