Possible Cam Install Error--help!!!
SNAKE COMMENT
THIS IS WHAT I HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT ALL ALONG. IS IT POSSIBLE THAT I DID PUT THE CAM 180 DEGREES OFF TOOOOO?? DAMN, I HOPE I DIDN'T.
SNAKE CAN YOU CLARIFY YOUR STATEMENT ---THAT FUDGE STUFF IS PRETTY TRICKY.

No!!!! Don't do it.
If you have the cam at 6 and the crank at 12 TDC is on #6.
Here is a pic of mine.

My Haynes shows the timing marks pointing at each other crank at 12 and cam at 6 WTF who's right and who's wrong. Or am I just interpreting something here. Sorry for being a post rapist too.
THIS IS WHAT I DID. CRANK AT 12 CAM AT 6. HOWEVER, MY CONCERN IS THAT WHEN I MOVED THE CRANK TO BRING THE #1 PISTON TO TDC, THE #6 PISTON ALSO APPEARS TO BE AT TDC. IS THE #6 PISTON REALLY AT TDC OR WOULD THE PRESSURE OF THE VALVETRAIN ON IT CAUSET THE #6 PISTON TO NOT REALLY BE AT TDC?? HERE'S WHAT I MEAN,------WOULD HAVING GONE ANOTHER FULL TURN ON THE CRANK GIVE ME TRUE #1 TDC OR NOT??------I DON'T WANT TO GET SCARED WITH THIS SCENARIO BUT I AM HOPING IT IS ONLY A VALVE ADJUSTMENT MESS UP.
LET ME KNOW WHAT YOUR COMMENTS ARE.--PLJ

If your cam is at 6 and crank is at 12 then the dowel pin will be at 3. In this instance, #6 should be on TDC compression. Rotate the engine till the dowel pin is at 9, then set your valves. All will be well. #1 cylinder will be at TDC compression.
I just finished this job about 3 weeks ago; I did it operating on these assumptions and my engine fired immediately, and ran well.

THANKS FOR GETTING THE CHIMP OFF MY SHOULDER----THIS IS DEFINITELY WHAT I NEED TO DO ----ADJUST WITH THE DOWEL AT THE 9 O CLOCK POSITION. I'LL KEEP WATCHING THE POSTS THOUGH---BUT AM NOT WORRIED TOO MUCH ANYMORE.

Okay wait a sec here, before i go off the deep end thinking i will have to tear it down to rotate the cam. lets clarify this crystal clear. I have heard two different versions one with the cam and crank installed at 12:00 and one with the cam at 6 and the crank at 12. In My Haynes manual it even shows the cam at 6 when the crank is at 12:00 or dot to dot. as i have always remember it. Its possible to have the cam 180 degrees off. Which would make for a ****ty day trying to get it to run!!! I mean the cam only turns once for every 2 crank revs. Crap this is making me sick thinking about this. I think I'll call the wife home for some stress relief
then come back to it later. Next question for when i return...can i check this without tearing down the whole front of the motor??

SNAKE,
CALM DOWN, I THINK YOU ARE MISUNDERSTANDING WHAT THE POSTS HAVE SAID--AT LEAST SOME OF THEM---OR ONE--- THEY WERE TELLING ME THAT TO ADJUST THE ROCKERS, THE CAM AND CRANK GEAR WOULD BOTH BE AT 12 O CLOCK. HOWEVER, THE CAM AND CRANK GEAR, FOR INITIAL INSTALLATION, WOULD BE CRANK AT 12 AND CAM AT 6. TAKE A DEEP BREATH NOW.......LET IT GO NOW.......... AND READ THIS MESSAGE AGAIN!!!!!
TAKE IT EASY MAN, HOPE I HELPED IN CLARIFYING THAT.

So did you get the car running then atlasengr? Im curious because after reading all that stuff theres a chance I might have done mine wrong, although I didnt adjust the valves that way, I did it by rotating the crank until the lifter was on the flat part of the cam (I had a guy thats done this 100 times with me of course). Mine runs fine though, and if yours didnt start and thats the prob then Im guessing mines fine. And if you didnt get it running, did you check that vacuum hose, because that was the exact same thing that happened to me when I tried to start it for the first time?
