Positive battery cable wires...

Was looking at my positive cable and it looks pretty cracked and old now. I noticed there were 3 wires going out of it though, I knew where 2 of them went (Positive battery terminal, alternator) but the 3rd wire ran straight down and out of sight. Anyone know where this wire goes to or what its for?

This leads me to the second part, do i need to get a GM replacement ($$$) cable for my car? It appeared the parts stores only have this kind of cable with hookups for the positive terminal and the alternator. No 3rd wire.

The 3rd wire goes to the starter, like on any car. I am not sure the GM ones are even still available.

I think the GM part, 12157373, has been discontinued. The AC-Delco part is
4SX45-2T, found it here:

Try giving that part number to Autozone, sometimes they can special order stuff like that. Or just try a local AC-Delco retailer.

I just installed the battery cables from innovative wiring on my car two weeks ago. Very good quality. Brought my volt gage back up past 13 and the car seems to run better too

How tough to install? How'd you wire it to the starter?

I don't see how it would be any different than the stock cable.

They weren't to bad, the hardest part was getting the cables to bend the way i wanted them to since they are so much thicker. I just routed them the same way as the stock wires, the terminals are already on the wires. The wire to the starter just runs along the block and is held in place by a clip bolted to the block, you can see how it's supposed to go when you look at the stock wiring.

The only thing i would have done different is maybe laying the new wires out in the sun for a bit so they would have been easier to bend.

The AC Delco and GM cables have been discontinued. The innovative cable is the way to go unless you want to make your own.

Greg, thanks for the tip. I just received my cables and they should be going into the car this weekend.

I ordered a set of cables and I must say VERY good craftsmanship. Outstanding customer service.
