So then there really isn't anything to gain from buying the ported Granatelli MAF? Or the one on Summit that says it is programmed for a CAI?

Re: Porting MAF ENDS

The lighter wallet might give you an extra .0001 in the quarter. A Granatelli can with stock tuning occasionally give a slight gain by tricking the pcm into running the motor leaner than it is programmed to at WOT. It is not exact though and often causes drivability problems. For less than what the Granattelli costs you could fix the WOT AFR the right way, by reprogramming the pcm which will also optomize the spark and many other pcm controlled parameters. Since the Granatelli tricks the pcm into running leaner than it is programmed too it can actually do damage to engines when combine with a properly tuned pcm by causing it to run too lean. I know someone who lost a stoker on the dyno that way. Screwing with sensors is not the way to make power period that includes the IAT and O2s as well.

On the rich thing yet the stock settings are rich which should only be fixed with pcm tuning, other workarounds may work at certain airflow levels or things like that but the only way to dial in the whole fuel curve is through the pcm.

94zgreenmachine, I live a little ways north of you If you make it to WIR and see a Caprice chances are it is me, say Hi.
The magazine said by removing the screens it would lean the mixture out. This was one of the first mods I did and I was just getting into my car then so I was pretty naive to just believe what I read.

I try to make it WIR but last summer was very busy cause I work out of state at different times (mainly during the summer ). Next year I plan running at least the street class or at least Real street drags, when I am home.My 383 will be ready this month to assemble. FINALLY. You must know or heard of Dan Kuik. I work with him. He runs top eliminator running like 7.75 E.T.'s . Gets to be a small world sometimes I'll be sure to stop by next year(which seems to be very far off)

Re: Porting MAF ENDS

Descreening a stock MAF will cause the pcm to command a slightly leaner mix because the MAF is slightly under reporting airflow, the stock settings are too rich so leaner can make more power but acomplishing it by messing with the MAF means it will be there at part throttle too and the O2s will see it the pcm will then correct for it and the gain is lost. Reprogramming the pcm is the way to correct the overly rich stock tune, I have the cable and laptop if you need a hand loading a proffesional tune. Actually at the moment I only have a OBD2 ended cable for OBD1 to go with my OBD1 swapped Caprice but I just bought a 95 Roadmaster wagon(LT1 is standard) I need to get an OBD1 ended cable for soon. I too descreened my MAF years ago right after I bought the car, now I understand the car better and hopefully go about things a bit more scientifically.

Re: Porting MAF ENDS

Guess I am late on this but doesn't hurt adjusting the question. Is there any big difference between the 3" Impalla MAF and the 3.5" Z28 MAF. I am replacing my damaged 3.5" MAF with a new 3" MAF. Am I going to loose any power.
