Porting Exhaust ports with heads on car.. Possible?

Please dont reply if you dont know what your talking about.. I have my headers off waiting to put my new ones in.. I had my heads ported but the exhuast ports themselves were only touched up a bit. Im putting 1 3/4" primary headers on and would like my exhaust ports to match.. Is this possible to do this on the car? I have plenty of room..

It's possible, but do you really want all the metal shavings floating around in your heads and possibly into the cylinders? Besides, it would be pretty cramped working spaces.

Yes and no, You CAN NOT just start porting them. You would have to crank the engine for each port to make sure the exhaust valve is closed. That way its nearly impossible to have a piece fall down the port and into the cylinder ( That could a MAJOR disastor if you got metal shavings in your engine )

I personaly wouldnt do it, but if your set on it, DEFINATLY rotate the engine to clsoe the valve, port it, clean it, then rotate for the next and so on... O yea, one more thing to do if you HAVE to port em while still on the car is to have somebody hold a shop vac next to your dremmel ( Or whatever your working with to do your porting) and suck up all the stuff too, it will help prevent any tiny pieces going where they shouldnt

Is it possible......yes.

But why would you want to.....instead of half assing it why don't you just take the extra time to take your heads off and avoid the risk of shavings in the cylinders.

eh.. Screw it. I was just thinking of grinding them down a little to match the headers.. they were ported already and im not up for taking the heads off the car right now... lol.. Screw it.. I was just wondering if it was possible.. I dont see though why aluminum dust would hurt anything...

yeah those exhaust valves will have nice stress risers in them when your done, Ohh & not to mention every port will look different, & ohh wait, you can't get your dremel behind the valve which is where it counts most. This is too funny

Damn, InjectedSS, I thought I was being fairly nice with my repeated warnings about your attitude but it looks as though you are just slapping me in the face. Oh well.

You'll probably be chillin' out for a little while now

Just for the hell of it, I'll give you a serious answer.

If I understand correctly, you're trying to gasket match the exhaust ports to the new headers.

Well, if you really want to do this, go to the drugstore and get a bag of cotton *****. Tie thread to a few ***** and stuff it into the port, then backfil it with shaving cream. Not the gell stuff, the old fashioned white foamy stuff.
Repeat for each port.

Now, that won't guarantee that you wont suck metal down into the chamber on a cylinder that's on a down stroke with the exhaust valve open, but it's your best shot.

Having said all that, I don't suggest gasket matching anyway, provided the opening to you header's primary tubes is at least as large as the exhaust port.

So, to sum up, please don't do it, but if you MUST, use the cotton and shaving cream trick to give you the lowest probability that you will mess up.
