Porting 58MM TB

What is the most you can port your stock intake throttle body to, is it possible to go to 58 with a stock and I intend to port the intake to 58 as well because I think theres some untapped power in there!

Port the TB? Well, you can port it out to 58mm (iirc) if you have another set of butterflys to go in (we used to have a board member that provided that service I think). Or heck, cut out the center section and work up a monoblade.

How much power are you pushing? Kinda doubtful you will find a big gain from it unless you are pretty heavily modded (heads / cam, full exhaust). Just imho though.

I run an AS&M 52mm TB on a healthy set of ported heads, mid sized cam, full exhaust with MAC headers. I did feel that a 48mm might be costing me a bit, but doubt I'll ever run so radical for a 58mm.

Those go back about a year and a half. Read all those and if you still have unanswered questions then try to be specific and either I, or hopefully someone who knows more than I will be able to answer them.

Hope that helps and good luck.

I was joking a bit there, really I think only a handful of the members on this board benefit from even a 58mm, much less a monoblade.

It isn't that I don't like having plenty of room to breath (within reason) it is just that TB are usually pretty expensive and that money, usually, can be spent better elsewhere.

Those links will give you a wealth of information, especially watch for posts by some of the boards prominant members, Fred (Injuneer), Brent (LT1 Tech Moderator), Ken Mook, and others that gave very well thought out and lengthly responses to this same question over the past 18 months or so.

I sincerely hope you'll read them and make and *informed* decision.

Here's what happens to a stock tb when you get it out past 53mm. In the next few pics you'll see a 2.11"(53.4mm) bore.

This picture shows how it breaks out around the throttle shaft boss on the spring side.

In this picture you see some square looking breakouts in the top of the bore. This area breaks out well before you reack 52mm, which makes me wonder what the bored out 52mm throttle bodies look like when finished. Also the bolt holes from the top cover plate break out well before 52mm.

I make inserts for the throttle bodies that press in to the bore and the final product flows the same amount of air as a 52mm and is only at 2"(50.8mm) It flows 740cfm @1.5"Hg and looks like this when finished.

My next task is to make a 58mm version just to see what happens. But to do this I will have to bore the throttle body out with a mill rather than on my lathe so I can control the offset of the bore inward to reduce the break out on the throttle shaft bosses on the outboard side.

Are there any 52mm or bigger throttle body templates out there, like someone scanned and I could print it out as a refrence on how much to trim off? Kinda like gasket matching I suppose

Don't do it before major mods ...
People have proven you can hold up to at least 400 hp, and not even needing to touch the TB. And as others have said, too much TB with not enough mods can hurt performance.
