Ported heads for free!!

Well here's the situation...a local community college has been doing a lot of rebuilds and have ported and polished a few sets of heads..i believe a few mustangs..maybe a few chevy's...Turns out i know one of the main guys through a friend and could get them to do it by just making like a $50 donation when they're done..however if they mess up, they wont cover it...should i chance it?....i think it would be the finshing touch to my project...what do you think?...thanks Tony

current mods:
LT-4 hotcam kit
JET HOT LT's, w/ custom X and no mufflers or resonators
3.73's
Meizere
MSD 6A
OVC wires
AIR,EGR, TB-bypass
CAI, w/ ported and polished MAF
vortech intake lb

maybe some ported heads?

Even worse than not having any experience with LT1 heads is having experience with standard SBC heads. I wouldn't do it myself. With all the money you'll invest in the car, why skimp on one of the most important parts?

There's no way I'd do it.

i would do it. if they screw up oh well lt1 heads are dime a dozen. if they do good.... ported heads for 50 buck. now dont send then afr's or anything.

what you ought to do is buy you couple of set of stock cast heads and get them to them all (if they do the first set good) and sell them on the board after you get them flowed.

That's what I'd do...buy a pair on ebay and then have them do it...if they do a good job either use them or sell them. Why not take the chance.

This thread's been dead a while...is the community college still doing this? I just put LT4 ported heads in my car and now have my 106k stock heads to fiddle with. Hmm, could sell them on ebay

Where exactly can I buy a new set? I will port them set them up with new valves, Lt4 springs and some Roller Rockers before I bolt'em on. New everything on them. I want the least amount of down time cause my car is a daily driver.

Why buy a new set when you are going to have everything replaced anyway? Get a used set for about 200, port them, and send them to the machine shop.

In all honesty, you should just research porting a little bit, especially on lt1 heads, and do a decent, but safe port on your own heads. Most tech's while in school wont have any more experience than most of us do with head porting, especailly on lt1's. This way you probably wont mess up your heads doing a conservative job, and you will learn at the same time.
