Re: ported heads and 1.6 rockers with stock cam

I would look for some type of cam. If the reason for using a stock cam is a budget thing, look in the for sale section and get a Hot Cam, CC 305, etc. If you are using a stock cam because you want it to be a sleeper, get a GM 845 cma, CC 304, etc. I have seen these cams used for $75 to $150.

You will see some gains with the stock cam and ported heads but mainly in the upper RPM. If you use one of these cams mentioned, you will get alot more gains in the low and mid range AND a top end increase.

my buddies 95 z28 went 12.4 with stock ported heads/bolt-ons/ and stock cam. was much more driveable than a cammed car too IMO. if they are max ported stock heads i would guess in the range of 320-340 (Auto, full bolt on ) - 335-355 (M6, full bolt on)

keeping the stock cam because i cannot afford a torque converter yet haha..thats basically my only reasoning..that and it will be cool to have a stock sounding car

Re: ported heads and 1.6 rockers with stock cam

I ran an XE 224/230 with the stock converter and 800 rpm idle for about 2 years. I added a trans cooler just to be safe.

If I had to complain, it'd be that it wanted to lurch a bit at a dead stop. Other than that, no biggie. Obviously I didn't make the most of that cam with the stock converter, but the car was still a blast to drive.

I'd get a cam with those heads, dude.

What if the concern was more for spinning a bearing? It would seem that disturbing rings and bearings by changing the cam on a high-mileage motor without a rebuild could be dangerous.

That's the reason I was thinking about putting my heads on with the stock cam, and putting on some 1.7RRs.

Re: ported heads and 1.6 rockers with stock cam

I have heard all types of excuses for beraing problems on LT1. . . from "not a clean install" to the block twisting a lil different due to the head bolt torquing when the heads are reinstalled. I am not sure how much I believe most of these excuses but I am just repeating what I have heards. I am not sure what the main problem is with some of the people that have had bearing problems but here is my take on it . . .

I think that the average stock engine with stock heads and stock cam, etc that is used to pulling up to 5800 RPM and making 270 RWHP can have some slight bearing problems that do not show up. These problems can be due to over heating, skipping oil changes, running low on oil, etc, etc, but the problems that are there might allow the engine to last a long time seeing only 5800 RPM and only making 270 RWHP.

Once a new cam (and possibly ported heads) are installed and the RPM range is increased by 400 to 700 RPM and the engine is making another 30 to 100 HP (with heads) or more, the bearings will see some abuse thay are not used to. In my opinion, this is causing most of the problems that people have. Just my .02 cents.

Re: ported heads and 1.6 rockers with stock cam

On my 95 Formula, I reset the revlimiter to 6000rpm at about 25K miles and ran it to that quite a few times. Then at about 35K miles, I had a mild cam (214/214) and 1.6RRs put in. Again, I left the revlimiter at 6Krpm. I drove the car until 95K including lot's of roadcourse use/abuse and never had any issues with it. I used Mobil1 5W30 or 10w30 for most of the life of the car, and usually did the changes every 5-6K miles.

Of course the shop that did the cam swap specialized in f-bodies, so mayb they did a better job than other shops. Or maybe, it's just that you usually only hear the horror stories about cam changes and not the successful ones. I would be willing to bet for every 1 person that's posted a bearing failure after a cam change that there are probably 100+ LT1 owners in the world that have done a cam change with no issues.

Re: ported heads and 1.6 rockers with stock cam

i had close to 100,000 miles on my 95 when one of the head gaskets took a dump on me and turned my engine into a big water pump. i didnt want the down time (machine shop) so i tossed my new heads and intake on since it was apart. they are basically stock but ported for a 396 and running 1.6's. car runs great and no problems at all. its been 2 months and 2 oil changes and no signs of debris either. not a huge increase in power or anything, but i really wasnt planning on getting any since everything else stayed stock. a bit more at higher rpms but all in all i wouldnt do it unless you were gonna do a cam too. i just did it since it was convenient. any questions you can im me. chris
