port quest.

Is a 22,000rpm die grinder too fast for working on cylinder heads?

No, most cutting porting bits are rated at 25,000.

Ok, thank carnutz I just wanted to double check because I had read that the ginder needs to oporate around 10000-12000 for cylinder head work.

Thumbs up

I tried one of the 22,000 rpm rotory grinders that Sears sells and tried to do some port work on Aluminum LT1 heads but the bit was moving so fast that as soon as it touched the head it was jumping all around the port. Almost ruined the head, I then logged onto the net and did a search for electric diegrinders and came across a company called Sunner where I purchased a variable speed electric grinder 4000 - 9000 rpms and have sucessfully ported several heads and intakes. I fell this is much better for a novice or first time head porter, because you can start off slow to match your opening and start your port shape then speed it up for mass metal removal with CONTROL.

Cool

It's better to start off a little slow since your working on aluminum heads, it will cut right through. Steel heads is a lil different.
You could buy a controller i'm sure to limit the rpms on the piece you already bought.
