Polishing Heads

Any gain to polishing them or roughining up the ports? I have heard many who say rough is better and others who say polished is the way to go???
(don't have the money to get them ported but have them off do to replacing head gasket so I wanted to try to improve a little.)

Also I think I am going to polish the combustion chambers to reduce carbon buildup and detonation. Any advice or tips? Thanks!

Re: Polishing Heads

Just leave it alone. Save your money untill you can do something fun. I tried to "home port" a set of heads (gasket match actually) when I had my hot cam, and gained nothing (dyno tested). Just a big waste of time, but I was supprised at the amount of material I removed . Lastly, in my attempt to 'save money' I ended up messing up the casting so bad I had to buy new ones when the time came to have them professionally ported. The car never had a problem running, but my head porter could not undo the wrong I did.

Not going to do any "home porting". thats not what I meant. I know many people that regretted ruining a good set of heads and most lost power. I was just going to lightly sand/ clean casting slag/ and polish the combustion chambers to a mirror finish to prevent detonation as I will be running a high DCR. Just wondering what finish the ports like (rough or smooth)?
