I keep getting a code P042. What does a catalyst system efficiency below threshold, bank 1. Does it mean my driver side cat is bad? What are the long term effects? What can I do short of buying a new cat?

 

GUT IT or CUT IT! Just get rid of it. Your loosing a lot of power if you got a clogged cat brother. Do like me and just cut it out and weld in a pipe.

 

I dont have the resources at home. What would an exh. shop charge? Any effects on O2 sensors or engine? Should I do both?

 

How do I go about gutting it?

 

I don't know how the 96's cats are set up but If you can pull it off take a crow bar and just keep jamming it in there until all of the honeycomb falls out and its clear. I did that with several of my other cars. My Grand Cherokee I just left it on the car and rammed the tire iron in there. I took it for a drive after and nailed it and blew all the scraps out. Way more power now. I had about 90k on it at the time.
