Plug wire replacement

Hello Board-

I am replacing the plug wires on my 94 Z28 with a set of delco replacements. I got a pretty sweet deal on them and figure I can avoid any burning by re-using the factory looms.

I have headers on my car and progress is slow - even on the driver side. I have a couple of questions:

1) any recommendations on order for replacing these? I have done the first two on the driver side, yeah I know, the easy ones.

2)I am working on loosening the "shelf" that the back wire sits in, I have the back bolt, where is the front one?

3) I have heard the passenger side is a real PITA, but I have to pull the alternator anyways. Once again, any thoughts on which one to do first? I am looking at investing in a service manual soon. As always, the Chiltons is worthless.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Re: Plug wire replacement

Hope you headers dont scorch your plug wires like mine did. Good luck though man, just get in their and cut up those knuckles, there isnt any easy way about it. I didnt remove and parts that didnt directly relate to the plug wires, but it might be easier doing so. With headers it should be easier though.

Re: Plug wire replacement

With headers, you are not going to want to use stock replacements. I did that, 4 times, and thats with fiberglass boots on the plug wires.

I recommend getting an OTVC wire kit, and get some Taylor Boots, you'll thank yourself later. The cost of the OTVC will easily offset all the sets of wires you would normally burn up.

Re: Plug wire replacement

I have the driver side done, not really a big deal, just need to be patient. I have the stock metal boot on #5 and no others on driver side. No burns in 20K miles since header install. Hoping for the same continued luck.

I figured I might as well do plugs now too, so that may hold me up a little.

Will be starting passenger side this week.

Thumbs up Re: Plug wire replacement

Took me 12 hours with addition to MSD install and oil chg. Yes you need patients. On the passanger side you will have to remove the belt, the alt., and loosen the powersteering pump, and remove the idler pully just to rout the wires. To do the plugs I suggest you get a 1/2 inch drive flexie-head ratchet and if you only have 3/8 drive sockets get some adapters. Throw a little bit of anti-seze on the new plugs before installing so they will pop right out in the future. Good luck......if you got the drivers side done properly then the passanger side should be no problem. Oh that shelf on the drivers side is tough to get off. I suggest loosening the back and front bolt and prying it out.

Re: Plug wire replacement

Since youre routing them this way I would definately get some boot covers and sleeves for the wires.

The OTVC sets are mostly cut to fit.

You can buy andy cut to fit set and then buy the LT1 Opti boots from Thunder racing., Taylor makes them.
