Please Help me on this, 1.6 Rocker Ratio?
Please Help me on this, 1.6 Rocker Ratio?
First off I pretty new here so let me say Hi I'm Jamie. I own a Mint 1994 Camaro Z28 pretty much stock and I want to start modding it for performance. I don't want to limit it to a 1/4 mile hour at a time car I want all out Performance and Longevity. I started getting my parts and so far I have installed a CIA, Performance Intake Elbow and Air Foil. I am going to do my Rockers and Headers next. I have heard that changing to a 1.6 Rocker Ratio is a big improvement? True or not? If it will I was toying with the idea of installing Carnes Quick-Lift Pro-Series Shaft-Mount Rocker Arms For Small-Block Chevrolet. That is what NASCAR uses and from what I read it is suppose to be a real improvement. What do you guys think. I new at this and my other car came Factory Fast LOL. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Answere me here or send me an email @ jamdroy55@comcast.net please. Jamie55

Do some searches on LT1 roller rockers. We don't use shaft mount rockers, so that would be a major project which definitely is not needed if you aren't planning on anything extreme. They do not yield any more hp, merely a more stable and stronger valvetrain. Just get whatever LT1 specific roller rockers you like and some upgraded springs. If you plan on a cam in the future, make sure your springs will support the increased lift or you'll be changing springs twice. Not a fun job. If you don't ever plan on a cam, just get some LT4 springs and GMPP 1.6 rockers and call it a day. Usually you will get a 10hp/tq increase all across the board from this mod, so it's definitely worth it. I'd reccomend hardened pushrods, non-self aligning CC pro mag rockers and GM guideplates. Again, search for any of these terms you don't know about, and good luck.

For starters, If you have a "mint" 94, I wouldnt touch it... I made this mistake with my show room condition 95 trans am i used to have and let me tell ya, it was a mistake. Just my opinions, but im no one.
And just being curious, whats your other car that came factory fast?

What he said ...
As for springs, if you do plan on camming it, a great all-around spring, that handles tons of lift, and shaves off a good bit of valvetrain weight are Comp Bee Hives ... Its actually common to use an LS1 Comp Beehive and a LT1 retainer for them. Their the 918 springs.

Re: Please Help me on this, 1.6 Rocker Ratio?
i wouldnt touch the car if it's mint and you're the first owner....but if you bought it used and intended on "fixin it up" then by all means, we can help you.
if youre serious about the valve train stability then go with a 7/16 rocker stud and rocker. there are some SA rockers out there that have the bigger stud....and you wont bend them or break them....no questions asked.
while you're doing the headers now would be a really good time to step up to a new stainless y-pipe. random tech makes a good one with cats and if you dont want them....there's a cheaper version or you can go with jegs/summit/slp y-pipe that's bigger than factory and flows better. also, check some of the vendors for a good exhaust system. dynomax is great sounding, solid stainless, and really cheap. i'd stay from flowmaster though.
also, in most cases people start with suspension. the car makes decent power from the plant.....what they skimped on was the suspension. it's nice for a cheap sports car but with the right suspension it can handle any curve at extreme speeds and g's. some shocks, sway bars and control arms and you'd be in some serious business.

Re: Please Help me on this, 1.6 Rocker Ratio?
It's your car man... don't mind them... do what you want with it... I bought my car from someone who has a 10 sec (tho he's never ran it at the track, it is VERY capable of a 10 sec timeslip, probably mid to low 10's) 2000 Trans Am WS.6 with 20k miles on it. It's the sweetest car I've seen.
Anyways, 1.6 rockers are a nice improvement... If you plan on camming your car in the future you should probably go ahead and wait till you get a cam.. However it will help a lot. When you replace your rockers get some LT4 Valve Springs as well... Your looking at 10-15rwhp I believe.
Oh, and he's the original owner of the Trans Am, it's his first car he purchased new as well.

Re: Please Help me on this, 1.6 Rocker Ratio?
I would like to know which car you had that was "factory fast" because in the F-Body price range, I dont see much being significantly faster other than a 03-04 Cobra. Maybe somethign is wrong with your car? Seriously ... They are pretty fast cars, all stock. I would think that this car is just as fast as your old 90's Cobra was when it was stock, if not a hair faster.
