Piece of the crank hub broke off!! HELP!

WTF! I am SO pissed right now.

I was taking off my crank pulley (installing electric water pump), and when I took the 2nd bolt out, a metal piece fell on my head. Turns out it's one of the 3 pieces that the crank pulley bolts to.

Can someone please explain to me the easiest possible way to replace it?

I feel you pain i was there a month ago during my cam install this is what i did. I got a sawzall blade for cast iron and i cut 3/4 of the way all around the hub and then beat it of. i then took the timing cover off and used a 3 jaw to pull the crank timming gear and the rest of the hub off. i was scary but i didnt damage the crank at all.

You can get a keyed hub from Thunderracing.com

Why were you pulling the crank hub to put on a electric water pump? You might have to put some heat on the hub and try pulling it with only the two remaining ears. Make sure and be careful with the heat though, as you will probably ruin the front main seal (no biggie).

I believe you have to remove the front cover to plug the water pump driveshaft hole.

I would try to weld the tab back on and apply a little even heat to the hub and try pulling it off. Assuming you have access to a welder.

I am surprised you did not crack the timing cover with that procedure. It must be stronger than I thought.

I kept an eye on it, but a wide socket was used so that the force was not concentrated on one small area.

Re: Piece of the crank hub broke off!! HELP!

I broke mine too because I did not recognize that the puller must push on the crank bolt threads...

I chose a more expensive but less time consuming path...

I took the timing cover loose, pulled it out over the crank hub which destroyed the seal, spun it upside down and cut a huge notch out of the cover to remove it. Next I used a large two prong puller and carefully pulled the crank gear and hub off together without damaging the crank bolt threads.

I did have to grind material off the puller legs to fit behind the crank gear, but it worked. Unfortunately, it seems like the cover and the hub cost me $150 or more....memory failing......need to drink more beer to kill off the weak brain cells....survival of the fittest!

It's hard to tell from teh pic but you might have been able to use a normal 3 leg puller on the flats of the hub between the ears. I'm pretty suprised that the timing cover didn't crak as well. I would consider yourself pretty lucky.

There's barely anything to grab onto...it wouldn't have worked. I used the widest socket possible so that the force was not concentrated on one area.
