Pics of my blown headgasket, What do you think caused it?

Whats your opinion on how to keep this from happening again. I had another thread about different gaskets to use already. Still dont know what to do. But anyways, how do you think this happened, detonation?

Did the car ever overheat?

Best things you can do to prevent that from happening- Have the heads milled to make sure they are completely flat, make sure you torque the head bolts down in the correct procedure and torque spec, and keep the temperature of the motor from getting too hot.

When I blew a headgasket I replaced them both with a new set of F-car LT1 GM gaskets, new GM head bolts and was very careful about the whole thing. After that the radiator clogged and overheated the car really bad a few times. The block cracked and upon teardown the headgaskets were still holding.

Yea, it overheated the night before it happened. I initially thought it was that, but the car had trouble starting the week before, one time the week before it made a loud clunk and wouldnt start, i tried again and it started. Well this time i went to start and it just went clunk, clunk, and it was hydrolocked. I think it had a small leak and the overheating just pushed it over the edge.

LT1 head torque is 65ftlbs...... you could have split the gasket if the head wasnt completely flat

That being the case something must be warped. I would check the head and block with a streight edge to see what's up.

Welp, the other side was blown too, didnt even know it. It has two holes in it, on the #3. They look exactly the same as the other one, coming from the bolt holes.
