personal preference.... A4 or M6

ok last nite i screwed my trans at the strip (at least i think i did).

it hangs all gears, slips, goes from 1st to 3rd/4th
and the TC goes absolutly crazy

well im wondering if i should get another automatic or a manual.... ive been wanting a manual for several years but havent been financially able. i am now though

soo... i wanna go to the drag strip and turn good times every once and a while (not every weekend). and i wannna have a good time driving on the street

so, would a 6sp kill THAT much time?

what is YOUR opinion on the transmissions? (personal preferance)

personally, i prefer the manual tranny to the a4. i have an a4... but this is the first automatic i've owned out of the 5 cars that i've had...

the reason isn't cuz the manual is faster when it comes to racing... but just cuz it's more enjoyable to drive, i think. there's nothing quite like the feeling of ripping thru 6 gears just for the hell of it...

when it comes down to performance, a 6 speed is always gonna be bad ***. the only reason an auto is better in that field is cuz you can drop a full half second in the quarter by throwing on a torque converter. an a4 with a 3200 stall, a shift kit, tranny cooler, 3.73 gears is a ****ing beast off the line. with that set-up you could easily run low 13s in a quarter on a near bone stock engine.

i realize this, but i'd still rather have the 6 speed. if i don't wind up selling my car for a 6-speed like it or trading it in for one... when i come to the tranny problems you're having now, i'll most likely be doing the m6 conversion.

just my .02.

M6 are funner to drive and sometimes I regret getting an A4 in the last two Camaro's I've owned but when it comes to racing...especially if you race brackets...you can't beat the A4.

And like what was said before, a good TC more than makes up for the additional hp loss through an automatic IMO.

Do a search for the conversion...there have been a few long posts with step by step instruction and links to pages for the conversion.

I'm swapping to an M6 right now. Still waiting for it to arrive and some time to do it though.

I just couldn't find an M6 car that fit what I wanted when I was looking last year. M6s make up around 10% or so of the 93-97 F-bodies from what I've heard. All the ones I looked at were either HIGH mileage, person wanted WAY too much, the car was TOO far away, beat to CRAP, or wasn't optioned how I wanted(convertibles, strippers, not-my-color types, etc). When I found the green machine below, I just had to get it even though it was an auto. But that'll be taken care of soon (hopefully).

I'm doing it for the fun factor and reliability of the T56.

I don't have the link handy, but if you go to the search page and do a search for "Alex conversion" in LT1 tech only, you'll find the link to a page that a board member put together. Very informative.

I'd say it'll be worth the switch to the T-56.

id do the swap if i were you. why worry about the reliability of the A4 and having to screw with adjusting the line pressures so it will shift right? the T56 is probably the best street tranny out there judging by how many high hp cars now have them and how so many guys retrofit them to all cars. i rarely hear of a T56 breaking and the only downside i can think of is clutch replacement... but hardly an excuse IMO. now you might also need gears if you dont already have at least a 3.42 but still not that big of a deal.

If I lived in a more hilly area like San Fran, I'd demand AT. I've driven 5sp for a little under a year, but it's just too annoying and nerve-racking when you're on a 40* slope. Other situation would be if I lived in LA, or had a commute which sent me into bumper to bumper traffic on a daily basis. Don't think i need to explain my reasoning here. Heh.

Since I don't, it's manual all the way. It's a helluva lot more fun.

Plus, MT does not cost as much to maintain. It can already take as much power as I plan to throw at it in stock form (perhaps the clutch will need replacing...) Regular maintenance consists solely of keeping the fluid fresh... and that's only every 60k. No big deal.

MT... ****. I paid $250 to flush the tranny on the Volvo beater..!!

Highway robbery. Don't even want to ask waht it would cost to rebuild the thing.

I like auto, there much easier to drag race, more accurate, and there isnt a huge differance in performance besides a little trap speed...From a roll in street race thats a different story...
