PCM tuning neccesary???

I have an LT1/4L60E combo that im going to be putting in a hot rod and I am deleting the air pump, the egr system, and the MAF sensor. I am adding a 52mm t.b., 160* thermostat, delteq ignition, a transgo shift kit, and shorty headers. Will it be neccesary to have the pcm tuned in order to have my engine run right? If so, any body have the name of a good tuner? Also, would it be possible to have the rear o2 sensors turned off in the computer and keep the engine running correctly? Thanks for helping a newb out.

Re: PCM tuning neccesary???

what year lt1? did the 97's cxome with rear o2s? I can't remember but if they do you can just get o2 simulators and just plug those in.

the only reason for wanting tuning for those changes would be to shut off the SES light which I don't know that you are going to have to deal with. with the 160 thermostat it is good to program the fans to come on sooner, but once again, if you are building a rod I don't invision you using the stock fan anyways.

Re: PCM tuning neccesary???

What year(guessing 96-7 because of the rear O2 thing)? Reguardless yes it will have to be tuned, I would recommend keeping the MAF if possible plumbing should not be too bad and they really are a good thing. The 52mm TB alone is enough reason to tune the pcm without it you can fry the tranny faster. If indeed 96-7 I would recommend using an OBD1 pcm just that pcm will cost less than either making an OBD2 pcm ignore the rear O2s(which have zero effect on engine anyway just a cat tattletail) or sims. pcmforless.com or madz28,com are both good guys.

Sorry, it is a '96 LT1. Would it be possible to use the factory cooling fan wiring to control an aftermarket fan?

Frame Layer; Check my sig and contact me off list if you like. I am a transplanter too! There is a small board for transplanters recently started. However i will respect this board and not post it here. I can direct you in a PM. Long story you will need to get your pcm tuned. Pretty easy stuff for a tuner or to do it yourself if you are handy with a computer. Point and click stuff. You may also want to consider a ODB1 conversion just for the sake of tuning. The software i really like TUNER by CATS has promised an ODB2, thats you, compliant version soon. So if you are in no real hurry well worth the wait. Very easy to turn on fans with the PCM best way really for transplanters. That way the computer and cooling work hand in hand. PCM tuning can also set the on and off points for the fan(s).

TC is great but it sounds as if the OBD2 version will cost enough to bring you back to the OBD1 swap. My car is a transplant too but an easier one, it came with the L99 a 4.3L version of the LT1, I did the OBD1 swap and got cables and logging software for just what a one time OBD2 tune would have cost.
