Paying for a rebuild: For dummies?
Ok, lets start with the basics...replacing the shortblock is everything from the heads down minus the accessories and the oil pan. That means you will get either a new or reconditioned block as well as new or reconditioned rotating assembly, new oil pump and timing set and a new or reconditioned stock cam. If you do the long block it is the entire engine minus accessories, oil pan, intake and exhaust manifolds. Personally your best bet would be to call a place like Jasper and get a rebuilt engine and have it installed. Or you could contact Golen Engines and for not much more have a 355 or 383. In your situation I'd look more at the 355 as it's really a stock rebuild with a .030" overbore of the cylinders and a set of forged pistons. Both places would be able to furnish you with either engine setup (long/sortblock). Be forewarned most shops charge more to swap a shortblock into a car due to the fact that you have to swap a lot of parts from the old engine to the new....including heads, intake, oil pan, sensors, etc... If you're looking for a competent mechanic, it really depends on where you go. You don't necessarily need a performance shop to do the work, so go shop around. Even Midas/Merlins type shops can usually handle an engine swap, but talk around and see where friends have had good luck. Nowadays engine swaps have become a lost art as most cars are designed to be thrown away when the engine fails do to the rising cost of replacement and labor compared to just replacing the entire car. Sometimes you can find shops that only do engine swaps, though few and far between. If you find one of those, try talking with previous customers and see how they liked the experience....sometimes those places are just full of hack wrenches... Either way there are a lot of options and it can be a little bit of a chore to make a decision.

I looked into jasper engines, but i couldn't figure out how to get the prices there. How does that place work?
I also checked the other place Golen engines...it seems like that price is the same price as just getting mine rebuilt & installed. One place I found was going to charge 3999 includes labor. They said it might be a bit more though depending on problems they find.
