Question passing CA emissions

I got a quick question. I'm in the military and I live in Japan right now. I'm getting ready to be moved to northern CA. I have a '96 Z-28 that has very few mods done. I have 1 5/8 BBK shorty's, Moroso cold air, and FlowMaster exhaust. Does anyone know if my car will pass CA emissions tests? If it won't, what will I have to do to get it to pass?

Can't you register your car in your home state or something? CA has a stick up their *** when it comes to such things.... it'll probably pass if its not got many mods though.... as long as it has a fresh tune-up, etc.

All those mods you listed are smog legal so I don't see why you wouldn't pass if your car is running right.

passing ca emissions

The only thing that is'nt legal on your car is the headers. I have the same headers, and everything is hooked up, and I have'nt had any problems. But BBK never got their headers approved for Calif. Make sure you have them test the car before they actually smog it. Most smog tech won't be bother about the headers, as long as everything is hooked up. But make sure that they test first so that if the tech has a problem with them you don't get hammered.

Grendal, I will be able to keep my car registered in Tennessee (where I'm from) but in order to get a sticker for my car to get onto Beale AFB I will have to get a smog inspection. Since my car will still be registered in Tennessee then I shouldn't have any problems about having illegal parts on my car should I?????? I mean...I won't get fined or anything will I? I don't think that I like the state already!!!!

Emissions wise your car should pass if your cat is good. My car passes easily with similar mods. If the headers do not have a CARB E.O. number they are not legal technically. That will come down to how attentive the smog technician is. If your EGR and AIR are funcional you might get away with it.

That's true you still need to get smog even if the car is registered in another state. I hate that also with the base policy. With your BBK's you will fail visual inspection, then as for the roller test you might past if everything is working good. When you go smog it just let them know that this test is for miltary base access, that if you don't use cailfornia plates. They will do a quick test to see if your car is in standards. you'll get a copy of the test to show the base.

Vinny is right. You'll still need to get smogged before you can get your base sticker. If I were you, I'd get some info on the local shops. My motor passed the sniffer test with no problems whatsoever, but the guy never even looked at my headers. I hear that long ago, the BBK's used to be CARB legal, but not anymore. You just have to find a shop that doesn't go WAY overboard on the visual. I just got my Z registered out here a couple weeks ago after getting out, and I had to go through all the B.S. you're getting ready for. As long as your motor doesn't have major problems (O2 sensors, EGR, etc.) You shouldn't have to worry. If you're down here in San Diego, I know a shop that will pass you.

Good luck

Do those headers have anything on them identifying them as BBKs? If not, tell the smog technician that they're Hookers. The E. O. number is O-164-5.

you need to move to a rural part of TX. and you can drive a top fuel dragster as long as it has tread on in the tires . down where i live if you go to get you inspection sticker and ask do yall do a smog test. they will ask you in return "what is smog testing"

what a great state i live.

Hey Bud,

I took a look at your car pics. I really like the way you done the cold air. It looks like you gave me a new project.
