Painting Intake???
Painting Intake???
When painting an intake what kind of paint do you use? Also, do you use any primer or clearcoat? If so, what kind? What kind of longevity can I expect from the paint if do paint my intake? Any help would be appreciated.
I think BMR Fabrication will do it for around $50. Cheap and good.
i've painted 2 of my intakes and another one of my budies.
it much cheaper than shipping away your intake and waiting a week to get it back.
you need soap, bucket to clean the intake with and paint
this is how you do it...
1. clean the intake off, soapy water and degreaser is fine.. nothing to harsh on the intake. then take a wire brush and get all the loose particles and extra tough grime off. wash the intake off and let it dry fully. then tape up all the area's you dont want to paint, examples of this are..the fins of the top of the manifold, TB surface holes, fittings that havent been removed and most importantly ...THE HEAD MATING SURFACES, TAPE THESE OFF. DOESN'T HAVE TO BE PERFECT, BUT JUST COVER THE SURFACE ~~~
2. after the intake is clean go buy and hi-temp paint, as long as its above 500' dupli-color makes engine paint at 1200' ,this works the best .... Prime the surface with a smal mist of the paint, nothing thats gonna make you see a layer of paint or large area's of color. LET THIS DRY FOR 30 MINS!!!
3. You can now start to apply thin coats of paint to the intake, make sure you use even strokes and remember not to shOot the intake with quick shots of paint other wise it will bloche up and run!!!
4. after you have put 4 coats on the intake and it is dry, do the same thing with a 500" or higher clear coat paint. dupli-color sells this also. 3 coats of clear will be enough and make sure you let it dry between each coat, and DONT'T TOUCH ANYTHING
5.thats it, no be carful not to scratch the intake, the paint will harden up alot more after the car has been through some heat cycles.
hope this helps, also this should cost you around 10 bucks.
