Overheating Problem /// Please Help

OK this is driving me nuts. Car started over heating last week. I took the car to my Dad's shop and pressure tested the radiator. I had a few small cracks on the fill side of the plastic tank. Took out the radiator and repaired it. Repair didn't work. Bought a new radiator today and its overheating again.

How do I know if my fans are working? I replaced the sensor that goes into my water pump and it seems like they are still not coming on. I had the car idleing after I put the new radiator in today and the temp rose all the way to the mark right before the red mark. As soon as it got to that mark it went down to the half mark.

So I'm thinking the high temp fan is working but not the low temp fan. Also when the car starting getting hot on the way home, I turned on the A/C to see if that would help with the cooling. It did a little but the air coming out of the A/C vents was not cold at all, it was coming out warm.

All this started right after I lowered my car. I saw that my air deflector was cut in half (only half of it was on the car the other half was ripped off) I thought it looked bad so I took it off. I didn't know how important that piece is for cooling. I went to the dealer today and put a new deflector on.

I was thinking of putting a manual fan switch on, but if the fans aren't working like they should I don't see a point in having them come on early. -Any thoughts or help would really be appreciated- Thanks ----> Brad

manual fan

I would put the manual fan switch back on
at least this way you can keep the car running cool, its good insurance, until you can find out why your fans aren't comming on.

my fans come on at 225 to 230, hope this helps

Its normal for the temps to go all the way up to the last white mark? The mark right before the red?

If its normal then why did my car never get this hot ALL summer? Its cooler outside now and my car has never been this hot.

I don't think 240+ degrees is normal.

well, chill man. relax.

when i first bought my car, it would do the same thing. so i replaced my t-stat. it did not help. so i reprogram my fans to turn on at 185, and now, it never past 190*.

so turn your fans earlier with tuner cat......

peace

stock fans come on at 217 degrees, 225 and more is not normal, you could have a blown head gasket or a bad thermostat

Yeah I was driving today and my Scanmaster was reading around 240 degrees, so woudln't that be my fans not working?. Does anyone know how to troubleshoot fans not coming on? If I blew a head gasket, wouldn't I notice a loss in power? It feels just as powerful as it always has. I'll go get a new T-stat and put it in tommorow. ----------> Brad

my car was overeheating to 240, even 'check gages' likght came on... later my roomy told me to check my air dam, and i was like nah..

i found out my airdam was not bolted up, so it was blocking the radiator causing it to not get any air flow... its bolted up now, and car is not doing any higher than 210 at traffic, 190 at normal cruising

I only scanned the other replys and everyone seemed right but you NEED all of the air deflector on your car. This is the only way to get good air flow through the radiator when the car is moving.

EDIT: I also hated how the stock fans came on so late, so I have since programed the PCM so the fans come on earlier. Now it never gets above the half way mark (unless something is wrong).

I dont know about anyoen else but when my fans are on, I know it. They are loud. As for toubleshooting, start with the fuses, thats where I started and luckily ended my search. Also, make sure they are plugged in nice and tight, they might have worked their way out. I was overheating for a long time and turned out I was using the wrong type of thermostat. I dont know the specifics on the different kinds but the t-stat from AutoZone will not work on the LT1. Dont know if that helps but that was also part of my problem. I now run a homemade fan switch and my car runs absolutly no hotter than 180 ever.

Hey,
I had a problem with overheating. Turned out that I didn't bleed all the air out of my system after a heads/cam swap.

Just my $.02
