overheating
overheating
First off the car has been sitting for the last few months. I start it and let it run once a week or so but other than that it hasn't really moved. Anyhow I moved it into the garage to fix a few paint chips with no issues. When I brought it back out I had a bit of trouble getting it back in its spot. I noticed when I got out of the car that it was overheating badly, the rad cap looked like it was about to blow off
It was kind of jumping around and I could hear sort of a gurgling sound. The car also started making a high pitched whine from underhood.
My best guess is that the waterpump has gone bad and the whine is the bearing. The only reason I ask is that I replaced the waterpump last summer and the old one just weeped when it went bad there was never a whine.

The rad cap was kind of moving up and down a bit, and I could see that a little coolant had gotten by it. The waterpump was a cheap reman one, I reused the 160 thermostat I had in the old one. There wasn't any leaking while it was parked.
The coolant was definitly bubbling in the overflow I could hear it as soon as I got near the front end.

waterpump cont.
Thanks for the suggestions, but there is definitly a nasty sound coming from the general area of the waterpump. Keep in mind the sound first started around or just before the car overheated.
I of course did not keep the receipt so I will have to pay for another one.

When you replaced the W/P, did you inspect the W/P drive splined shafts and splined coupling? Mine were stripped and slipping, and made a whine. If you do pull the pump, take a good look at those parts, too. Other sources of whining from the pump could be a pump bearing or drive bearing, but that shouldn't lead to overheating.
Yeah I didn't clue into that the bearing wouldn't cause overheating until last night. Still seems strange that the sound from the waterpump and the overheating seemed to happen at the same time. Maybe I broke the shaft and its just spinning without spinning the pump
^Very possible. Not likely broken, but maybe stripped. Not hard to check. there is a splined shaft on the pump, another one on the drive gear, and an internally splined connecting tube in between. If the splines are gone you will see it upon inspection. Need to remove the pump to get at those parts.
I think you can also pull the front cover off the pump and try to spin the impeller, without removing the pump. It should not spin by hand. I think you should check that, if you are confident the system is full and it still overheats.
