overheat at idle 94Z28

when my car is driving my temperature is fine when im idle the temperature rises to about 240 and right before it gets to the warning temperature the fan turns on and starts to cool the car down. I've changed my thermostat and my temp sensor, but it seems my fans are coming on way to late....my coolant is green not the orange colored coolant...might that be the problem?? My coolant has never been flushed...could my radiator maybe bad..any ideas are appreciated....

The fan does not kick in until about 220-230 degrees, mine is the same way.

That's normal. I didn't like it either so I installed a manual fan switch.

Yep, that is normal...very annoying if you are at the track waiting to race on a warm day. Only option would be to put in a manual fan switch like x7x7 did. Thermo isnt gonna do too much for you there.

Basically, what everyone else said. Get a manual fan switch and have your pcm programmed to turn your fans on earlier. This is pretty much the only way your going to beat this. Spring is here and its getting hotter out.

A temporary fix would be to run the Air Conditioning when you're sitting idle. I believe this causes the fans to run regardless of engine temp. This has always been my remedy to an overheating engine. With my A/C on, my engine tends to run at 170-190 while idling, quite a bit cooler than with it off.

If you're at the track, just run the ac while you're in the staging lanes. Off when you stage

Thanks,
-David-

If it just started happening recently and it only happens when you are idling it could be a degregation in the cooling. Could be a worn water pump, radiator problem, or an old fan. I would do the manual fan switch to see if that helps the problem but finding the root of the problem is the best thing to do. With the cooling system its really just a "replace and see if it helps thing". I replaced my water pump and radiator before I figured out that my hoses were old and collapsing on themselves. Good luck on tracking it down.

Cam94Z has a good point. Just run the AC when you are waiting in line at the track. That will keep the fans on constantly.

If you've never changed the coolant on a 94 Z28, I'd say a radiator flush is well overdue. My engine seems to evaporate water quickly also, so check your antifreeze levels often. If you've got the money, you might as well replace the water pump since you have the water drained anyway.

Also, the temp gauge probably isn't very dead on accurate, so what looks like 240 may actually be within the 220-230 range. A 10 degree increase just when it's starting to get warm outside probably isn't a big issue.

The water pump, as MeanGreen97Z mentioned, could be a problem as well. With the engine completely cool, remove the radiator cap, start the car, and let it run till the engine gets up to temperature and water starts flowing. Look down in the fins of the radiator where the water is flowing. If this is just a trickle, or is pulsating, your water pump could be on its last leg, or your radiator may be partly clogged. If the water flow seems to be fairly strong, especially when you rev the engine, I would rule out the water pump, atleast for now.

Thanks,
-David-

It is normal, You can get custom programing or set up a switch to turn on the fans. Also if you turn your A/C on to max and turn the temp to max heat this well turn on both fans and cool the motor.

Well, it certainly would be cheaper than a new radiator, and may help if not solve the problem, so it's worth a try.

Just try to get the new type of coolant after the flush, it works more efficiently anyway.

Thanks,
