Unhappy Same thing

I've got a '86 that is doing the same thing. Flushed the system, made sure the radiator was clear of junk, replaced the reservoir, res cap and hose, added new radiator cap, new water pump, relays work, etc.

The fan is intermittent, but a mechanic friend swears just the fan wouldn't cause it to overheat. Runs fine on interstate, but when in stop and go traffic it blows and smokes.

Recommend replace the fan? What else? Thanks...
