Is this the optispark?
Is this the optispark?
i was wondering if my optispark is going out.....my car seems like it kinda cuts out some when im driving. doesnt matter what gear. almost like surging, but i have to give it more gas then its fine. changed plugs/wires so i know its not that. does this sound like the optispark? (btw my car has 120,200 miles. dont know if the opti has ever been changed. its a 96 z)THANKS!
Re: Is this the optispark?
Could be, but then it could be something else too. The only real way to know is to eliminate other possibilities to arrive at the final conclusion. BUT don't do it by throwing parts at it. Tune up parts is one thing. For example, replace the fuel filter. You may even think about having the injectors cleaned professionally. Get a fuel pressure gage with a hose and tape it to the windshield and see what the pressure is doing when the problem occurs.
Now that you have the fuel system proven good, move over to the ignition system. Again, this is just an example.
You should however do some other things that are relatively simple and definitely cheap. Like checking and cleaning the EGR, the IAC the throttle body and the MAF. Each of these devices can and will influence the performance. Also consider getting it scanned for codes that do not illuminate the SES light. You may indeed find the opti is bad. With that kind of possible milage on it, I'de replace it. BUT the point is, other things can be eliminated as the cause before spending big bucks and time. And you (us) become more familiar with the engine and it's components.
I'll get off my soap box now! Sorry

first off, thanks for the reply. ok i have already replaced the fuel filter. i put fuel injector cleaner, but not professionally, just the stuff from the store. i have no emissions. maf is descreened. the only codes i got for it was for the skip shift because i didnt have the cags hooked up when i did my swap.
Re: Is this the optispark?
I have an auto, so mine felt even more noticeable.....usually if i clean out the throttle body and spray some carb cleaner in the intake once every few months it never misses a beat...good luck
