Opti Rebuild Kit

I was looking at my terminals on my opti and they look pretty corroded and covered with green crap, So I heard to stay away from the MSD cap and rotor kit, what about This kit from thepartsladi? I would get a whole new unit for 260$ but I just dont have enough money in my pockets, Anybody use this kit? What makes it a "rebuild kit" http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/GM-OP...Q5fAccessories

A cap and rotor are the basic parts. Looks like a dust shield with that one, too. Should be ok.

Anybody have a link to a good write up on removing and replacing the cap and rotor

Tools Needed

You will need a E4 (reverse torx socket) and a T9 torx bit. Just remove the 4 (E4) bolts from the cap..then use the T9 to remove the two torx screws that hold the rotor button on. Most people suggest using some loctite on the rotor bolts during installation.

it seems my opti just went out. does the rebuild kit pretty much replace everything in the opti that needs to be replaced?

No, it's just a cap and rotor.

well i guess i'll just buy a whole new one, im not taking a chance with just replacing a few parts when other parts could be messed up.

The "base" or back-half contains the bearing, the optical module and wheel, and the harness connector. All of those are prone to failure. Calling a "cap and rotor" a "rebuild kit" is misleading. Its just a cap and rotor.

To clarify: If you're having a problem with the 4 pin connector on your opti. The kit you showed will NOT fix that problem. You will have to change out the entire opti, not just the cap and rotor.

As far as a written procedure. It's easy to do and intuitive. Remove all the coolant you can before starting the job. Remove the crank pulley from the hub, the hub can stay in place. No need for any kind of puller.

See shoes website for more pics and so on.

The terminal I was referring to was for the coil wire, I honestly havent looked at the 4 pin connector yet, thanks for the reply

Should I put some threadlock on the rotor screws? It looks like it already has something on it.

Yep, loctite the screws.

Just a heads up for anyone planning on buying this. The new fancy white dust cap locked in place and everything fine , but it wouldnt allow the opti harness to plug in...at all. Had to use my old dust cap.
