opti. different kind of question

can a bad opti still provide spark to the plugs but not let the engine actually fire or start up? is that even possible?

Your question is a bit vague, but from the sounds of it - No.

If you are getting spark, I would look for issues elsewhere. Have you checked your fuel pressure?

depends on how it's bad. if it's a loose rotor then yes the engine can fire, but will not run well. if it's a bad optical sensor then it will not fire.

If the opti is not installed (phased) correctly, you may have spark, but no start.
